Hi guys, I suppose before I ask my question, I had better ask if it is all right to talk about Apple hardware in general, not related to music servers.

Thanks........
I have a G5 Quad 2.5, Power Mac late 2005 model. We want to buy an Apple LED monitor, but they tell me I can not connect it my G5, the video card required to run the LED wont fit my card slots, PCE, not PCI. Something like that anyway.
So I am wondering, Am I better selling my G5, and updating to a new machine, I have been told that the Intel machines are faster, and I was thinking of getting a 2.9mhz imac. Not a LED display, but very good display non the less.
Any ideas, recommendations, ideas. Am I better keeping my powermac and upgrading the video card, and go with a different monitor................... :dunno:

Speedwise my older dual core duo 2.33 Intel macbook pro smokes my G5 dual 2.3 PPC and the 2.7PPC at work, in photoshop. the G5s have 4.5GB RAM vs 3GB in the MBP. So a newer Intel will likely be faster than even your Quad PPC, unless you are running apps optimized for quad processors.

The Mini DisplayPort seems to be a very limiting factor for connecting the new Apple LED LCD to legacy DVI computers. Apple has a mini adapter which allows a new mini displayport equipped computer to connect to an old display but not visa versa. That sucks.

Other displays with your G5.... I run a 24" NEC 2490WUXI (non LED)with my g5's stock card ( a lesser card than yours). It provides amazing accurate color for photos--but definitely does not posses the Apple design aesthetic. You should be able to run any 24" with your stock graphics card. if you are just needing a display upgrade then leave the G5 as is and get a compatible LCD. If you are taxing the G5 get everything new. I rarely touch first gen technology, so I personally would stay away from the Apple LED display.

And yes the Intels are fast!

I have bought a 24" 2.9 imac.Ran a few jobs on it at the store, and it was considerable faster that the G5, so it goes up for sale :thumb:

I have the same machine and have 8 gigs of RAM in it.. The G5 wont run Snow Leopard the up coming operating system.. The Quad G5 is plenty fast, but definitely slower than the Intels now, but not by an insane amount. I have a Samsung 245T which is 24" and a pretty great monitor. Has an HDMI input and some USB inputs and the colors are pretty nice. I would keep the same machine, just look around for a monitor that is compatible

Thanks Mike, it seems that monitor isn't available in OZ. I am going to hook up the G5 tonight, and go from there.
I love the design of the powermac, puts to shame the PC.
