Advice on solid state pre w/phono stage
« on: 3 Jul 2009, 12:02 am »
As my system has changed, I have decided to try a solid state preamp. I am also looking into getting a modest TT setup so I am hoping to get one with a built-in phono stage. Right now my system consists of: Modwright Transporter, Consonence Cyber 211 mono blocks and Daedalus DA-1.1 speakers. I really have no knowledge about SS preamps so I am looking for a little advice on what would be a good fit.

This solid state Van Alstine pre with optional phono seems to get universal approval. :)http://www.avahifi.com/root/equipment/preamplifier/insight_sl_preamp.htm

I have been using MBL 5011 with CD direct and MM phono for a couple of months.  It's really good with tube amps driving the speakers.  It's not sterile at all.  CD direct would be excellent with your transporter and MM phono should be good with a MM set up.  I don't have a MM cart to try.  I use MC and so I have a tube MC phono stage into the preamp.  Silent background really helps out with tube phono stage and tube amps.

Does anyone know of a SS preamp with a really good Moving Coil phono stage? I like the simplicity of a an on board phono section.

I'm a BIG believer in dual mono throughout for vinyl - and I currently use a Pioneer SX-A9-J (receiver); using only the MM/MC preamp and tuner.

Remote, dual mono right back to the custom toroids, saved rack space and wonderful sound.  It's paired with ancient/updated Dukane tube monoblocks. It has a 'direct' path that switches out all unneeded filtering and equalization for best sound (and it works in spades)

I cannot recommend this unit heartily enough for the current selling cost of $695 :o

The MM section sounds nicer then MC (they had to take shortcuts somewhere), but otherwise there is simply nothing one can complain of at that price. The weakest perfomance part is the power amp section....using your mono's in it's place is the thing to do  :thumb:

The freakin' thing even looks kinda' sexy with a fascia that looks much like Plinius recent efforts.

If it was a specialty maker, this unit would be tagged at $2500.00 and get ooo's and ahhh's....because it's Pioneer and priced like nothing special, it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Find a Kenwood Basic C1 preamp, originally designed for they're mono blocks, which performs well.

I'm with Roy on this one. An Audio by Van Alstine Insight EC preamp is my favorite and the phono section (MM) is killer. High output MCs can also be used with it and have great success if the output voltage is above 2.5mv.

Add the tape buffer option for recording your LPs to digital.
