It was an analogue kinda night..

Last night my wife and I sat down and listened to one of our old favorite LPs, George Benson's "Give Me the Night".  It was pressed in 1980 and has been played many, many times back in the pre-cd era but it was remarkably silent with very few pops and cracks.  This was the first time I had played it since updating my preamp and adding subwoofers and the sound was glorious.  I pulled out my redbook cd, Quest label West Germany with no date so I'm guessing mid 80s, to compare the two.  Granted mid 80 cds were often pretty bad but the difference was not subtle.  The LP blew the doors off the cd.  The soundstage was huge and palpable with nothing lacking in the high frequency detail.  It was like comparing an incandescent bulb to a cool white fluorescent.  This album was produced when the world was coming off the disco addiction so there is some leftover here but I must admit that I still find the music accessible and engaging.  Do any of you own this particular disc/LP and if so, what is your opinion?  Be honest, you won't hurt my feelings.

Yes Jack, the VPI Super Scout has my attention but quite frankly my lowly Rega P3/RB301/Exacta is very, very good...an opinion shared by many of the analogue elitists... :thumb:

I'll be sure and point you out if we ever make it to an RMAF.  :icon_twisted:  Please tell me and the other unwashed exactly what your analogue setup consists of...and if you care to, the msrp of each piece... :o  Those speakers look like annies but the midrange is black.  What are they??

My former VR-5 SEs Gavin  :thumb:

The table is a TW Acustic AC-3. I had a TNT HRX before this and an Aries 2 before that. I heard the TW at CES '08 and I just fell in love with it. I put the HRX on the block as soon as I got home. The arms are a Graham Phantom I used with the HRX at the rear and newer Phantom II out front. Phantoms are the easiest arm I know of to set up and use. Carts shown in use are a Koetsu Jade Platinum again out back and a Dynavector DRT XV-1t playing in the picture.

I am a certified nuts cart hound. Not shown in the pics are the collection of carts ready to go mounted on their own wands. A ZYX Airy 3 S, A Clearaudio Titanium, a M.Y. Sonic Labs Ultra Eminent Be, Graham Nightingale, Dynavector XV-1s and an Ortofon A90. Problem with the 9s and the Lamms is that they are so transparent that changing carts is like having a totally different system in terms of presentation. It sounds all vintage like with the Koetsu and the others place you in all different positions in the hall as well as presenting all different hall sizes.

The rack is a custom sized Critical Mass Systems QXK Black Platinum with the Lamm LP2 deluxe on the middle shelf and the TW micro-processor speed controller on the bottom shelf. The Koetsu goes to a Koetsu SUT that then goes to the MM inputs of the Lamm.

I shall politely decline posting the prices as remembering might give me a stroke    Don't get me started on the LPs!

I have recently come to my senses and have slowed down on the analog front [[[[[[[[[[If I had a penny for every time I said that........]]]]]]]]]] mainly because despite the carts all being very very good as well as substantially different from each other , I have my clear favorites and the rest only get played when I am a) in the mood to tinker and b) need to hear something in a different light.

If I shall be in Denver this year methinks I shall wear a disguise!

That Acustic must be a load to take with you to your gigs.  I didn't realize you could scratch with a belt drive...   Yeah you're probably right about the cost of that stack.  It's gotta be right up there in the M3 stratosphere. :duh:
