Bryston 1v or 2v, sonic differences what??????
« on: 5 Jun 2009, 09:23 pm »
Hi, I was reading some threads about the Torus unit and one reply I read today was interesting from Werd, below is what he posted.

"Hello Folks

With the 4B i had trained myself to keep it on the 1v (louder) setting. With the power from the wall i found the 1 volt to be more responsive and musical imho. With the torus in play the 2volt in my setup seems to be way to go now. It has all the responsiveness as 1volt and yet seems to have better control of the soundstage in terms of placement and decay for some reason. It isnt as loud, but my AZ's are meant to be played very loud so its no biggie. Anyone who has a 4b  shouldnt forget about the gain switches (two different soundstages somewhat) in the back as its a whole new ball game with the Torus. Just something i thought i would pass on."

I have my 28's plugged into RM20 units, one per mono block so I did some switching after reading this and on my system there is allot of difference and not just loudness. So what's going on here because it's more than just loudness. What do you other owners have yours set up at, have you tried switching and if so what were your results. Just going back and forth for my first time I seem to prefer 1v but I'm not 100% sure and will have to do some more experimenting, (listening)

Hi DEV,
I haven`t power amplifier but reading the manual is clear that 1V is for RCA connection and 2V is for XLR connection and there is an option for pre-amplifiers with higher GAIN to set to 2V in order to avoid clipping use the volume in bigger range.

Hi Dev

The 1volt setting is more linear than the 2volt. The 2volt uses a resistor in series to cut power output. However the 2volt offers a better S/N ratio at 113db compare to 110 db on the 1volt setting. Having played with both settings with and without the rm-20 i find the Torus to make the difference more audible between the two. I like both settings but right now i am prefering the 2volt.
