Sub help
« on: 5 Jan 2010, 02:41 pm »
Danny,

While I really like my pair of OB subs (which use two SW-12-16FR Servo Sub Woofers per enclosure), for HT I need a little more impact and WOW! factor than they can provide.

I currently have a pair of homemade subs that each have a 2.8 cu ft internal volume and use a single 12" B&C driver.  The cabinet has a slot loaded port underneath, which I am told is tuned to 19Hz and increases the internal volume to 3.0 cu ft.

Is it possible to take out the B&C driver and replace it with SW-12-04 Servo Sub Woofer?

While the cabinets are nothing to look at it, they are well built and I would really prefer to not have to make new cabinets.

Thanks,

George

You might be able to do a set of double subs with 1.4ft each side using 8 ohm woofers and the 600w amp.  Someone (Sandbagger?) did one with opposing drivers that way though not sure of the net volume.

For the OB driver, please also try 20hz low damping and see if that improves the impact. Reducing damping will increase the "body" of bass sound.

2.8cu ft is too big for a single SW12-4. TomS has a good recommendation. You can also place wood blocks inside the enclosure to make it smaller. The largest I would recommend is 1.8cu ft for a single SW12-4.

I can't remember what settings I have the amps on, I'll check when I am home tonight.

I really do like the OB subs and they honestly play flat down into the mid 20Hz region - for music, they are outstanding.

After playing around with settings and talking to Brian, I am going to send him one of my amps to check out.

There is still a chance that something isn't totally right and is impacting the performance.

I'll post more after Brian looks at the amp.

Another idea is to add two more OB 12" drivers, one per side.  The amp will run three 12" OB's!

The two pair in the Super-V's sound great on music.  I do not do HT with them, so cannot comment on that aspect.

  Do you have an action movie you could throw at them?  Not sure what your set up is, if you have a way to send dvd or stream movie audio.   I would be interested in your impressions

They are not setup at this point at my place for trials.

Will see if I can get a chance with them for HT at some point, but might be awhile.
