Video uses highly regarded Faroudja chip reserved for higher end Oppo models (for example it was on the DV983H, but not the entry-level DV980H or DV970H). The 971 can also upconvert video from 480i to 720p/1080i
This player has also been converted to a region-free setting, allowing me to watch Chinese region kung-fu DVDs to my heart's content. Potentially big savings from buying DVDs from other regions outside North America. It also handles the following formats flawlessly: DVD Video, DVD Audio, DivX®, XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, WMA, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, Kodak Picture
Remote is upgraded from the original version, making it much more user-friendly.
Best of 2005 award winner for Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. Stereophile raves about the less expensive 970, which lacks the Faroudja chip for video deinterlacing.
