Selling my Clayton Audio S40 which is essentially mint 10/10. I am the second owner and the amp is probably a year old.  It is the latest 4500.00 model with all updates etc. The web is rife with a myriad of superb reviews, including one recent blurb by Marty DeWulf calling the latest Clayton amps the best amplifiers of any kind he has ever heard. Sound is to my ear slightly warm like a good tube amp, though with superb bass definition - unlike many tube amps! Great detail, though not 'in your face,' and spectacularly natural tone and soundstaging.  Pretty much drives whatever you like it to-- including the family car if you'll allow it.  You could probably also weld with it there's so much current on tap!  I suppose I wouldnt pair it with speakers which are already a bit soft, like classic Spendors or Harbeths (but then some tube gear with these is too 'pipe and slippers' for my taste).   Otherwise-- quite versatile. I would split paypal or use paypal echeck and it costs only 5 dollars! Split shipping (shouldnt be too much).  Oh yah-- the price.  It's 1995.00.  Okay-- 1950.00 if you're nice.

Definitely a steal and considerably below dealer cost. I would also say they mate well with Spendors with the right preamp.

I'm actually going to contact one of my customers and let them know you have them available. He's been looking for an S40 after auditioning one here but finances were an issue.  Maybe this will put it within his budget.

Note: Email sent to customer. I hope he follows up with you.

What preamp do you like with the M-300's?  I've been thinking of replacing my Cary SLP-05...

jtwrace,

The new Purity preamp that Bill (Bella Extreme/Response Audio) and I are coming out with shortly is excellent. I've been using the M300's for much of the voice testing. It's a perfect match but then it should be considering.

From a commercial standpoint, the Modwright 36.5 and 9.0 are very good choices. The H-Cat solid state preamp has worked well. SimAudio is another great combination. Tron is another one that's mated up well as well as Art Audio's and Gill Audio's preamps. Oh yeah, the VAC Renissance Signatuer preamp is also a wonderful combination and about the same price as the M300's. Actually a little more. We got very good reviews at RMAF the year before last with that combination and the Gershman Acoustics Black Swans.

The Clayton's are extremely versatile, your flavor of sound pretty much determines the front end but whatever you put in front of it, the Clayton's will bring out the best your front end has to offer.

I have been using the Red Wine Audio Isabella with built in Isabellina with the Clayton.  Quite a lovely preamp. Not sure if it's the very best match for the Clayton, simply because I dont have any other preamps around to see!!  Used to own a Modwright 9.0SE with tube rectified supply-- a beautiful and reliable unit. Would love to have heard that with the Clayton. Havent heard the 36.5.  You never see those used, so they must be keepers!  I have actually never heard the Clayton with Spendors so I was just reaching a bit there-- I figured since the Clayton is a smidge warm it might be too much to pair it with a speaker that's a touch warm- but as I say- havent heard that pairing.
