To go, or not to go? Johnny Winter
« on: 26 May 2009, 03:32 am »

I just discovered that Johnny Winter is performing in Ann Arbor in the middle of June.  Tickets are $35 each.  I'm trying to decide whether to go.  I'd hate to shell out for couple of tickets, plus babysitter, only to find that he's too sickly and frail even to hold his guitar.

Has anybody heard him live recently?  If so, how was the show?

I saw him last Fall, in fact I was in the band that opened the show. I have been a fan of JW since the early 70's and this was the first time I've had the oppurtunity to see him live. He sat down throughout his whole performance (presumably recovering from hip surgery) but his playing and singing sounded as good as he did way back when. Like you I was concerned his age and physical condition would hamper his playing but it doesn't much at all that I could tell, his voice may be a little weaker but his playing is still excellant, the guy's a legend.
I would rather go see JW again then any of the young hot shot blues players on the circuit these days.
