2B-Lp vs Original 2B
« on: 21 Mar 2009, 02:15 pm »
I am fairly new to the Bryston Circle.  My question is, what are the technical differences between the original 2B and the current 2B-Lp?

I purchased an older 2B off from e-bay about 3 months ago for $200.00.  I am very inpressed by the build quality of this amp.  It has an all aluminum body, xlr inputs and very stout binding posts.  This amp had previously been owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Company.  It looks to be well maintained and I was told that the capacitors have been replaced (4x6800uf).

The visible differences are that the newer model uses toroidal transformers but seemingly the amp boards look to be nearly identical.

The reason that I bought this 2B are that I am on a fairly tight budget.  I am currently in college and my funds did not permit purchasing a newer Bryston st series amplifier.  My associated equipment includes, a PS Audio 4.6 preamplifier, Dynaudio Contour 1.3 speakers, a Pioneer Elite DVD, CD, SACD player, and XLO pro 600 speaker wires.

This system may not scream high-end but to my ears the sound quality is very polished and refined.  What could I expect if I were to upgrade to a 3B or 4B?  Also what advantages are there to the newer st series.  The sst series will be out of my financial picture for quite some time so it is not even a consideration right now.

Final note the Contour 1.3 is a stand mount two-way speaker with a 4 ohm impedance and 85db-86db sensitivity.  Also I live in a fairly small apartment and really want to maximize sound quality.

Any information and hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You, Earl Y.

Hi Earl,

Do you mean the 2B SST?

If so they are quite different.

Here is the 2B LP

The Bryston 2B-LP amplifier is a compact, high quality 60 watt per channel, (8ohms),

Here the 2B SST (C-Series)

Bryston 2B SST2 amplifier is a compact, high quality 100 watt per channel, (8 ohms)

The original 2B was simply a "non-PRO" model of the 2B LP with RCA's instead of XLR/Phono inputs.

And I actually inherited one of those many years ago.  I had the same appearance and general specs as the current 2B LP (as in 19" rack mount and 60wpc)

Hi Guys,

We still build the 2B LP Pro unit for the professional market - broadcast studios love them.
http://www.bryston.com/2blppro_m.html. Also we sell hundreds of them a year to CAE and they use them in their flight training machines for testing pilots.

Anyway - the 2B LP has not changed a lot other than the power supply section and a few circuit board layout issues and different parts. It such a simple elegant circuit that it has stood the test of time.

The 2B SST is a totally different amp with different power supply and different circuitry.

Hey Earl,

I think you have a great system there. Lucky to snag a refurbished Bryston amp. The next upgrade when funds permit would be a Bryston DAC IMO. You could use the Pioneer as a transport (most likely). That would be best bang for $. And you could start a music server in the future as well if you went that route. Then later an amp upgrade if so inclined. But with the bookshelves not as important as a better source. Just my 2 cents. Love those Dynaudios :thumb:.

Best regards, MD

Hi James,

Brian Russell was here. He walked into my listeningroom and spoke the words : You have more Brystons than I have at home.  :)

I also have the 2B LP with balanced inputs.

That's possible.  :) The only thing that matters: I am a lucky Bryston user.
If drummermitchell feels the same, he's a very happy man.

I have also a B25DA, 14B SST and B60SST (all 2006), besides the B en ST-series.

Is that too old?

I told the misses that I will buy new hardware in 2026.
We all know that a beautiful fairytale.

I am TOTALLY HAPPY using bryston gear as it has gotten me  the closest to the emotional side of the music.
I do think I'm lucky being able to get this far with my gear and being 1000%satisfied,we'll until the 3.0 comes out.If I had older Bryston amps I bet I'd be happy with those also.I guess I work too much,
so I figure I needa the bigga toysa.Now I need a bigger room :o.

Hififreak,

maybe we misunderstood...
i just thought that the SST2 series would complete your setup. and there's nothing wrong to own 'old' Bryston gear, of course.
my amp is not SST2...so my gear is almost 'old', too.

Hi Al,

It's differcult for me (Netherlands) to express my feelings in English.
There's no need to be

Everytime when I push the button it works and I enjoy listening music.
At this time there's no need for me to go shopping.

This weekend six are invited.
None of them have Bryston gear.

I hope that they have a pleasant time and enjoy the music just as I do.
