N3 vs. O3
« on: 10 May 2009, 05:35 pm »
I'm considering moving to one of these kits. Any insights on how their performance might compare/contrast with each other besides the room location requirements of the O3?

Not sure how many people aside from Danny have heard both speakers.  While I can't speak about either of those speakers directly, I can do so indirectly.  I have a pair of X-Omni's (the slightly lesser version of the O-3's) w/ upgraded crossovers and Sonicap Platinums.  And I have heard the GR Research Paradox 3's as well as Neo-2X's w/ Sonicap Platinums.  So, I can at least give some insight.

The N3's and O-3's use the same excellent tweeter, so they should be relatively similar in that respect.  The Neo-2X's, which use the same tweeter, are simply terrific in terms of giving an airiness and detail to the sound.  Simply absorbing and very easy to get lost in the sound.  The best monitors I've heard thus far.  So, can't go wrong there.

There are likely to be 2 ways in which the O-3's and N3's differ.  Soundstage and punch.  My X-Omni's create a sense of space that is just delicious.  My room is 17' across and 10' high, and the Omni's do an admirable job of filling it all up, including projecting well above the height of the speakers.  And in addition to there being a large soundstage, it's also well layered.  There's a terrific depth to the images that comes from the omnidirectional design.  The sound is very natural and relaxed as well.  Which brings me to the 2nd likely difference, punchiness.  While my X-Omni's give a big sound, it's not going to pummel you.  With the upfiring woofer, the bass is more relaxed.  While you'll hear everything you need to, if you're looking for that kick in the chest like in HT, then the O-3's likely won't provide it.  Meanwhile, I'd figure that the design of the N3's are more likely to give you that kick.  So, it matters how you like your music presented.  While I listen to a lot of electronic music, I prefer the relaxed nature of the omnidirectional design.  I don't care as much about punch and I like good atmospherics that fill up my room.  So, given my tastes, I would choose the O-3's over the N3's.

Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, you said the x-omni has an upfiring tweeter. Actually, it has an upfiring midwoofer, and a front firing tweeter.

Hey emac, I think you nailed it pretty well.

In short, the O-3 might have a more transparent sound stage, but it's lower 85 or so db sensitivity is well off of the 91db level of the N3.

The O-3 must be well out into the room to work properly and at least 3 feet away from any wall.

Power handling is also better in the N3 as the two woofers are working together as a pair. The O-3 is a true three way.

Thanks emac and Danny for the input. The O3 sounds like what I want...but I think the N3 would probably be the better choice for my current space.
