VDA-2/VAC-1 causing speaker hum
« on: 23 Jul 2009, 12:10 am »
Hi All,

I have a VDA-2/VAC-1 combo being used with a SB3 and a Oppo 970 DVD player. Odyssey extreme monos and a odyssey candela complete the system. Until recently I had the Odyssey tempest and I had some speaker hum that I ignored. Tempest was known to have issues in some specific cases (usually power line issues) and I was just waiting to upgrade to the Candela. I got the Candela recently and plugged it in and the hum was really bad. I could hear the hum from the living room to the bedroom..I also have a tape player plugged into the aux input of the candela and it is dead quiet. So I took out the DAC today and plugged the oppo analog outs directly into the Candela with the same ICs. The hum is gone. So the culprit is not the preamp or the amp. It is not the ICs, which leaves the DAC combo, the digital IC from the oppo and the optical cable from the SB3. I haven't heard of optical cables causing this. I will change out the digital IC and test again but has anyone here experienced this issue before? I will have to do some tests to isolate it to the DAC or the power supply i guess. But I justed wanted to know if there was anything you all had heard/seen before that I need to be aware of.

thanks

Are you stacking the VDA-2/VAC-1?

They are actually one behind the other about 6-8 inches apart. Should I separate it as much as possible and see what happens?

It would only be a problem if you're stacking them.
Call us when you are able to try some things and we'll help you trouble-shoot it over the phone.
