I like your website Rudolf.  Anyway to translate it to english?

Anyways just an update on my 'ultimate' dipole project.  Since this is a one of a kind demo model, I'm going to do something slightly different.  Something that has to look rather stunning, and blending what people like about open baffle sound, and less of what people had to settle for.  The midrange in an open baffle I find is stunning, even with so-so drivers.  I really like the sound of larger speakers, so I'm likely going with a 12" coaxial.  I'll have to listen and measure several models before deciding on the final version.  I've also been carefully evaluation the bass solution as well.  I have a friend who is a professional percussionist come over to our shop and listed to all shorts of woofer set ups.  We both agreed that the open baffle bass sounded more realistic and just plain better than any sealed or ported enclosure that I have.  Haven't tried the horn loaded bass modules yet though.  Now I have to decide how to get that open baffle sound with good extension into a super slim cabinet.

Their website discloses this. I think AER does not make the field coils ... this is a modificaton.

I don't know much about this, however it has been used as ob

There have been a few mentions of the French PHY-HP drivers. They definately qualify for 'no expense spared open baffle' at $1500/driver. Has anyone heard them and care to comment on sound? I have been drooling over them for a bit and am hoping someone can comment from experience. Also the cone tweeter...Has anyone built the sand-filled baffle recommended on manufacturers site? Thanks.

omigod, I just went to the AER website.

What is that transparent horn on their home page?

How do I get it?????

None of their links list it. It looks stunning, and I'll be it sounds absolutely stunning.

hi

another vote for the fertin 20ex.
they really don't need a tweeter.
with high efficient boxed bass augmentation i have no problems listening to rock in a small to mid sized room.
i am crossing over at around 150 or 200hz . still experimenting with a Tact preamp / DAC / crossover.

I have listened to them a few times in the folded open baffle

They are really sluggish in the bass with no slam or impact you get with a proper designed open baffle system, they are rounded and 'vintage' soundind in the midrange where the harmonics are high in second order distortion. This makes them smooth but really lacking in resolution and purity. The piezo tweeter isn't too bad, comparable a decent dome.

I suppose they are probably the best of the single driver type out there.

They remind me of listening through a few yards of cotton except the top octave is open to the air

I'd avoid David Dicks (commonsense/audionirvana).  He changes names, brands, and speaker designs every couple of years.  Got one of the worst reviews ever with a former design and had the absolute worst reply to it ever.  Offers no returns, hides the use of tone controls, and won't demo his stuff outside his own room.
Your post about Mr.David Dicks are interesting as Hemp Acoustics of Mr.Perry Pecker has a very similar behavior...
HempAcoustics is no more, now they are http://www.EcologicAcoustics.com and the drivers have all new look.
They change the name etc to hide from something or what ?

Hemp and Nirvana do not inform in his sites, that both brands FR drivers are Made in China according the site www.tnt-audio.com in a test of the 8 inches FR.

Maybe Mr. PP and Mr. DD work together, seems they buy the drivers or some parts in China, they do not own a factory, they order a number of drivers and when sell all stock, the FR die obsolete or suffer a remodelation that changes the product completely.

I wonder if Mr. PP and Mr. DD are the same person, maybe next year will be a Mr.XX or Mr.ZZ !  A pity they are so.
Do anyone of you already see this both men ?

If price is not object: I would recommend the Fertin 20ex model 7 (surroundless driver)....much improve sound then the Fertin 20ex with a surround.

Removing the surround reduces the weight of the cone, greatly decrease distortion from cone break up , giving a clear and accurate sound.

Very significant improvement over drivers with a surround.

Has anyone experienced any of the Feastrex lines of fullrange drivers?  Corresponding with an overseas audiophile who has a pair of these drivers, makes me quite curious about what is some compelling about these expensive drivers.

I have heard a pair of Supravox EXC loaded up on a large Wooden horn(Brooks Sierra) and they sounded very constrained...very midrangey with an extreme lack of high end.  To be honest, I have heard much better frequency response from mini 2 way monitors than the Supravox that day.

My vote is for the Supravox 215 EXC field coils run full range in open baffle with a ribbon supertweeter at 10Khz and above with a two 15" open baffle woofers per channel run at 70 Hz and below (2nd order active crossover).  This is my setup and I am quite happy.

Jim, do you have a picture of your set up and also of the crossover part in the back?  It would be interesting to see it.

I have since put the crossover on a small wooden platform.  For me magnet wire works best.

Hope the picts turn out.
