Simple but good media player -- Quuxplayer
« on: 9 Apr 2009, 02:12 pm »
Folks,

I've been playing around with this for a few days now and think it is worth mentioning here as I have not seen any mention of it at all on any forums, but there is a simple, powerful, easy to use media player availble both as freeware and an upgraded Pro version for $10.

Lots of cool features like flexible and intelligent playlist creation, podcast and internet radio, remote control via a $30 logitech gamepad, etc.  Lots more -- take a look at:

http://www.quuxplayer.com

You need the pro version if you want ASIO support.

With the gamepad controller, this looks like a very effective solution for a media PC connected to a USB dac.

I'd be interested to hear what others think.  Hopefully today I'll do some critical listening to their asio driver vs. foobar.

Jim,

I've played with this quite a bit as some months back the author did post about it on AC. I had some suggestions and he was very open to them. I ended up going back to foobar but I can't remember the reason at the moment. I haven't downloaded a new version in quite some time. I'm sure my registration is still valid, thanks for the reminder as I'd forgotten all about it.

Looks interesting Jim.  Too bad the free version is limited to 1000 tracks.

It seems to be missing the view I like in Foobar, which is sorting by album artist (if present), then track artist (if album artist isn't present).  It's a good approach for working with a combination of regular albums and various artist ones in my opinion.

I downloaded Quux and I'm trying it out right now.

I was also playing with Songbird recently.  It's promising (and open source), but fairly buggy at the moment.

I initially tried the free version about a year ago and was so impressed I went to the Pro. version. In commparing Quux, Foobar 8.3. and Monkey Media I feel in my system that Quux is head and shoulders over the others. I do not remember about the others but this is a 24 bit system. Further Quxx has the VERY BEST customer support I have ever encountered. Any queston, problem, or concern I have ever posted to them as been answered by Matt within three hours; morning, noon, night Sundays, Hollidays, you name it  - the guy must either never sleep or he puts his email server under his pillow!  aa aa aa

Hi Mike,

Guess I missed that there was some talk on this on AC, but for me it looks very promising, though not perfect, with my screen reader

Brad, I'd bet you could use the intelligent auto playlist feature to sort the way you want, and then convert the results to a permanent playlist.  Song bird is just useless with a screen reader right now, and the fact that it is buggy means I probably won't put any effort into trying to write configuration scripts for it.  I think the top page has a misprint and I think it said 100,000 tracks with the free version.

Paul, great to hear that there is good support, that means the author may also be willing to work with me on some screen reader accessibility tweaks.

Glad to hear that a couple of folks are already using this in audiophile systems.

Quuxplayer website for Pro reports:

Import and Export of playlists or current views (.m3u format)

Has anyone successfully imported Foobar playlists into Quuxplayer?

JohnL, sorry, can't help you there.

Brad, you're right, the free version only supports 1000 tracks.  The text can be a bit confusing about this as it mentions both 100,000 and 200,000.
