1v - 2v voltage gain switch
« on: 24 Mar 2009, 12:08 pm »
I will be receiving a new 4B-SST2 soon and am trying to understand how the voltage switch works. I am going to use balanced inputs and outputs and it says to use 2v. What is the reason for this? My 4B-ST does not have this option unless it is done automatically.

Thank you

Hey danman you must be getting excited about your amp.... the switch is just a db gain and you can even switch it on the fly .... try both settings. Mine is set for 1v (loudest). I believe its just a resistor in series right before the output transistor that drops the gain in 2v. Not sure though.

Actually dont switch it on the fly Danman. There is a risk of damaging your speakers going from 2v to 1v.

I thought so but just wanted your opinions of this. Yes, I am looking forward to hearing the differences from my 4B-ST. Should have it next week.

Sorry to bring this up again but after using a 4B-ST and balanced setting, should I use the 1v or 2 v with my new 4B-SST2 that I will be getting soon? Don't really understand this.

I have read that I should use the 2v but in another thread to use the 1v! In the istructions it says to use the 2v so I am all mixed up I guess! :o

Dont worry about it....just use the 1v setting, make sure its set on both channels. there is a switch for each channel or u will have one channel louder than the other...

Danman;

I've decided to go ahead place an order for the SST2 on Tuesday.   But I'm going to try and contact the person that takes the orders and see if they can ship it Express (3 day air) instead of ground.  It took my BP-26 almost two weeks to Seattle. Must get delayed crossing the border or something.

Congratulations!

Hey thats a double congratz out to both of u now. Here's a heads up. When i got my 4bsq it wouldnt turn on for me. It was a crushing 30 min at least before i remembered James post earlier on a DOA issue with Audio1 and his 14b. Follow these instructions precisely or else your amp will not turn on and avoid the heartache i experienced lookin at the amp and having no sound...... .

Make sure the circuit breaker switch on the back of the 14B is ON before you plug in the power cord. If its already plugged in disconnect the power cord and then turn the circuit breaker on and then plug in the power cord to the amp.

The small green light on the back should come on (indicating proper voltage is available) - then power the amp up with the front panel power switch.

I did that and my amp fired up immediately.

I have a 3B SST with the  1V-2V  switch on the back. It simply adjusts the input sensitivity of the amp.

The 2 volt switch is usually recommended when using balanced because the balanced option has significantly higher gain than single ended. By decreasing the sensitivity of the amp ( 2V instead of 1V ) you have  more travel on your volume control before the sound becomes too loud.

I actually use the 2V with my single ended cables because it allows me even greater range on the volume control.

I think it is a great feature .

Werd

Thanks for the info.  I imagine that firing up your new amp and then having nothing happen must have been a real heart stopper!  I did almost the same thing with my BP 26.  Connected it all up, flipped the switch.....and nothing.  Took me 15 minutes to realize that in all the power cord clutter I had plugged in another component.  Tooooo many moving parts I guess!
