Naim Nait XS
« on: 26 Jan 2009, 11:06 pm »
Tonepub, any plans to review this piece of equipment in the future?

I'm thinking about trading in my Nait 5i for this thing to work with my CD5/Flatcap 2 combo.

If anyone has any comments, feel free to chime in.

I have one at home and sounds very good even without the external power supplies.

Tonepub...Excellent!  Looking forward to a review.

Ferenc, are you able to compare it to other Naim amps?

I found them more musical in my very unusual system than the Supernait was. It is more coherent, have an exceptional flow of music, a taste of the Naim NAC282/250.2 just a bit smaller scale and a bit smaller weight and a bit less energy. Extremely well balanced.  The Supernait has more bass and a bit cleaner highs, but somehow a bit more "hifi",  the SN has better sound probably but not much better music reproduction capability if any, if you know what I mean. I used the XS with a Promitheus NOS DAC (Zu Gede and Naim Hi-Line RCA - DIN cables, pro audio Evidence Audio Siren II speaker cables) and the DAC and the XS are perfect match.

But take my opinion really carefully, I am using very unusual PA speakers at home. So it is not your ordinary hifi system and your opinion can be very different than mine.  :wink:

However one of my hifi buddy tried the XS with a Zu Tone, and he got exactly the same experience then I got. He likes it a lot.

 Hello Ferenc_k;

     How does the Nait XS & Super nait compare to your BYOB amp?

Thanks;

The Supernait is completely different animal, not really comparable to the BYOB, to be honest I like the BYOB a bit better. However the XS has more energy and drive than the BYOB and it has a very similar fluidity what I like so much in the BYOB. If I am using the Altmann Attraction DAC, I prefer the BYOB a little bit more, but in my other system with pro DACs (Mytek, Lavry) and a Promitheus NOS DAC, I prefer the XS.

By the way:
if you are looking for the perfect speaker for a BYOB, look no further. Try the Danley SH-LPM PA floor monitor  :thumb: An 8 inch coax speaker inside combined with Tom Danley's tapped horn enclosure and Synergy crossover, 95 dB sensitivity, 60 to 20 kHz bandwidth and works very well not only with the BYOB, but with the XS too.
I have few pictures if you are interested in seeing the XS and the floor monitor in one system with Mana tables  :wink:

Thanks for the comments Ferenc_k.  Your comments seem similar to some of what I've read over at the Naim board.  Sounds very promising.

I'm interested to hear this, but am probably buying a friend's NAC 202/200.  Naim stuff is just fantastic.  Quickly pulled me right off the hifi merry go round.  I've owned a Nait 5i for almost 5 years now and I'm not sure I'll part with it.

I should have one of these in one of my systems hopefully by the end of this week.  Was sold on a Nait 5i,-2, but reading more about the XS has me convinced to step up a notch.

I've owned many integrated amps over the years, but this will be my first Naim.

Would be glad to share my thoughts on this model with any interested AC members after it settles in.

The rest the system this amp will be connected to:

Bryston BCD-1 CD Player
Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blue Ray
rega P-5 ; Dynavector DV-10X5 ; Bellari VP130 Analog System
Definitive Technology Mythos STS Speakers

Go all the way and get a SuperNait.

Has a great DAC and gives you the upgrade path for a HighCap2....
