« on: 10 Mar 2009, 08:09 pm »
[img]:scratch:hi i hope somebody can help,i purchased a 3-way bass reflex kit (prestige) from wilmslow audio in england,i have mounted the scanspeak and atc units in a ob design although these are not rear radiating units so dont qualify as such, but the bass is a volt radial 3143 which i would like to ob mount
can anybody help,is this a suitable driver anyway? i have a couple of images on my myspace account under my full name michael gannon or email visualacoustics@blueyonder.co.uk.thanks again

I am a bit confused.  If the kit was designed to go into a bass reflex box, why are you trying to make them into an open baffle system?  You realize that the crossover designed for the ported box will not work for open baffle.  Unless there is something that I am missing, it sounds like you are making a mistake in not following the design of the kit.

it was only after the finished design of the tweeter/mid section (see gallery) when somebody passed comment on my ob design, this was not a design configuration i was familiar with and had stumbled on by mistake....since reading on a bit i am fascinated by the whole ob concept and would love to carry it further with the bass unit if poss...which brings me here
the main thing i like is the fact that i can do away with a large 70-100l enclosure needed for the volt unit, all the drive units are studio quality and would love to finish with something a little different from the norm...would welcome all the help i can in making an exceptional ob Bass section to complement what i have already started..thanks mike

I see the technical specs can be found here - http://www.solen.ca/pdf/volt/rv3143.pdf

FS - 29Hz - that is fine
XMAX - 5.2mm - a little low for OB use
QTS - 0.35 - a little low for OB use

I suspect, based on the specs and not the crucial listening part, that they will not produce a ton of bass on OB.

You may be able to EQ them, to flesh it out some, and since you own them, you might as well try it.

IF you were looking to buy these, I might recommend some other woofers, in order to get better OB performance for the money.

BTW, LOVE the basket and design of these!

fortunately when i say bought the kit i sourced the units independently,as far the bass it came out of an old sub of mine so i am very open to any recommended driver choices (strictly high end of course).
also need some more info on crossover design
thanks mike

I think you should look at this thread:
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=65570.0

You will find many posts on here using either 1 or 2 Eminence Alpha 15s.

You might want to read this thread for info about a couple of other drivers

thanks Jeff i will have a look...obviously one thing i have just realised the saving on the reflex enclosures could also pay the way for multiple drivers if needed..
thanks again mike

I remember the aespeakers being mentioned in this forum as possibly excellent OB woofers.  However, I am not sure if anybody on here has actually used them.

The phone number for aespeakers is at the bottom of their homepage.
902-469-9198.

If you click the store link at the top of the home page, you will see a list of speakers.
At the very bottom is the IB15.  You can click that link for details and pricing.

I do not see the lo15 drivers anywhere though and I think these were supposed to better for open baffle, but I don't remember.
