Author query re: Listening Groups?

I'm wondering if anyone in this circle is part of a regular "listening group," sort've a music equivalent of a book club.
Last fall, in traveling to promote a book I wrote (1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die), I encountered a few folks who were interested in sharing their music discoveries with others in a sorta mellow setting. (I tried to organize the bookstore things I did that way, with music excerpts and then discussion. There's something nice about listening to music with other people, not just on headphones on a plane!)
Anyway, since then I've been looking for established groups of this kind, and haven't had much luck. if anyone has any experience with such groups, please share here (or privately via email at tom@1000Recordings.com)
thanks very much. great discussions here!

Hi Tom,
Welcome to Audio Circle
Great book BTW, though I haven't bought it yet I have flipped through it a couple of times at my local Borders.
I can't speak for the other Regional Audio Circles but I can say that the Gateway Audio Society listens to new music at our gatherings on a regular basis. We have a pretty good idea of each others musical tastes and when we get together as a group, we always pop on some new, cool music. That is one of the big draws for our gatherings. In fact at the gatherings at my place, I always have extra pens and paper sitting around so the guys can write down the artists they are interested in. More often than not those same guys go out and purchase those same CD's or LP's.
A couple examples. I picked up Jackson Browne's Solo Acoustic and played several cuts. In turn, several guys picked up that CD. The opposite direction, one of the guys turned me onto Rachel Farrell (amongst many others). There are a number of guys in our little group that are deep into a given genre. In turn those of us who are looking to delve deeper into that genre, we tap them on the shoulder to help guide us towards music we might enjoy. These guys are a great recourse that saves us tons of money from buying music we may not care for.
I/we find this is a great way to hear new music that you will never get a chance to hear otherwise (that was a slam against commercial radio).
To answer your question directly, we don't get together as a group and review a new album. We get tother as a group to visit, listen to gear and hopefully find new music that we might enjoy. Using a smaller gathering to listen to a couple of specific new releases sounds like it might be a lot of fun. I'll check with our guys at GAS and see if it might be something they might like doing. It would be a natural since each of us buys tons of new music each month (at least I do).
Gateway Audio Society
is found under the Regional Audio Circles.

Welcome, Tom!
Great book; thank you! Thanks a lot, too, for making me consider my own mortality while cycling through a song list!
Anyway, there is a listening group that regularly forms at my house. We also enjoy great barbecue, Monday Night Football, and some pretty good darts.
If you ever find yourself in the greater Ventura County area, you're more than welcome. We can play a couple of LPs you missed.
Lastly, if someone hasn't read Tom's book,
check this out.
Again, welcome Tom,
Jerry

Several of the various regional groups have listening sessions, although they are usually focused on equipment. You can check the one that is closest to you
I personally like the idea a lot and would be interested in doing this in the Santa Cruz, CA area - if anyone else in the area is interested

Tom,
I don't belong to a listening group, and haven't participated what you describe. I agree with Scott F., based on the two AudioCircle get togethers I've attended, that for these focus on the the gear.
But the coincidence for me is that I have been knocking around the idea among my friends of having a "listening party" this month. I immediately think of old 60's shows with everyone gathered around the turntable on the floor (I'm 42). What I plan to do is have my non-audiophile but music appreciating friends bring 2 or 3 of their favorite albums(and mp3s are allowed!) and pick representative songs from each-maybe even give a little into. Old or New, pop or jazz, rock or swing, etc.
This is going to be very casual and talking will be allowed! The idea is to provide exposure to music that one wouldn't ordinarily be aware of, but may enjoy. None of my friends have any interest in "gear" and I plan not to discuss it. I doubt if any regular listening group will come out of this but I wanted to do something music based. Not just a party with music, but a party about music. Should be fun.
I'll check out your book. And welcome to AC.
Cheers,
Ed

Ed...
please post and let us know how that evening goes.
I'm involved in a similar group....a few audiophiles and more super-experienced music business ears, and everyone brings a few selections to share. we talk about the music, drink wine (or bourbon) and hang. it's been incredible to discover music in this way. a bit of a "guided tour" vibe, with unexpected segues/juxtapositions, etc.
I'm 48. lots of folks my age did this kind of thing in college, but not so much now, with work/kids/etc. I'm curious if it helps people appreciate music in a different way, or encounter music they don't know, etc.
thanks again all...
