In case anyone was on the fence over No Rez

Consider this a check in the pro column. :green:

So I ordered a few sheets from Danny and received them yesterday.  My first project was to finish modding my Klipsch Heresy II cabinets.

First off, I gotta say No Rez is pretty impressive stuff.  It's somewhat hard to cut too.  I started with a ordinary pair of scissors but after a couple of long cuts and my hand subsequently cramping up on me, I eventually switched to a utility knife.  This was better although still a bit tricky.

Here's the before shot:

and here's after I lined the top, sides, and back.

As others have written, as soon as I fired up some music I noticed the difference immediately!  The sound seemed less constrained to the speakers and depending on the recording could really fill the room.  Dynamics seemed improved as well as the low level detail which was no longer being obscured by cabinet resonances.

I couldn't stop listening for a couple of hours!  Some recordings were marginally improved but others were brought to light in ways I was not expecting.  I could hear subtleties and overtones that I never heard before.

So much fun! :bounce:

For less than a hundred bucks No Rez is a no-brainer for improving the sound of your speakers.  I still have a little over a sheet left and am now trying to decide what to upgrade next: Definitive studio monitors, an old pair of Edge Audio bookshelf speakers (predessessor to Aperion Audio - with DiAural crossover) or perhaps my AV123 X-Voce.

I'm seriously considering No Rezzing them all!

Highly recommended! :thumb:

BTW, if you have a table saw, it cuts through No Rez like butter (clean too).

I was thinking of improvising, but now i'm really glad i ordered a couple of sheets, even though the shipping alone cost me 100$... :)

corndog71,Danny-
Did my H-IIs the hard way,too- cut the No Rez with a serrated bread knife- actually worked quite well. Also Plasticlay coated the two horns and woofer frame to further reduce resonances. Transformed the speakers...much cleaner/ detailed. Danny's service was exemplary.

Quick and easy but you might want to use an old sawblade. I did this and it dulled my carbide tipped blade.

That's odd. It never had any effect on my carbide tipped Piranha blade, and I have cut lots of it over the years.

Could the vinyl backing have coated the side of the blade?  It could be that the blade is dirty.

Table saw works great, you still need to be cautious about kickback. If the No Rez rides up on the blade a riving knife won't necessarily stop the foam from swinging around... and yes, just trust me, keep it flat on the table top.

And yes, it can make the side of your saw blade gunky, I forget with what I cleaned up my blade.

Lots of black kibbles all over your shop.

That may be it; I noticed some smoke when cutting and thought the blade was dull.

Can you glue in some cross braces in that cabinet in addition to the no-rez?  That'll stiffen it even more.

I  have used No Rez and found it to be very effective in damping and eliminating enclosure resonances. Great product! Also, I have found that a band saw does a good job cutting No Rez.

Well, that cabinet could certainly use some additional bracing.  But it might be easier to just build a new box rather than try modifying the original cabinet.  It would be nice to give them a different finish as well since they're pretty beat up on the outside.  But I don't have the space, tools, nor woodworking skills for all of that, so it aint gonna happen anytime soon.

In their stock form they sounded muffled and barely threw up a soundstage not to mention rolled off the highs considerably.  Since adding the new tweeters, replacing and remounting the caps and inductors, replacing the cheap foam insert with some polyfill, and now adding no rez, these speakers are a hundred times better sounding.  Heck, if I wanted I could update them further by adding the Heresey III drivers and crossover but that's not really on my list of things to do.

I'm pretty happy with them now.  It's time for another project.

For those w/o a table saw an electric turkey carving tool works great too....
