World's Largest Record Collection
« on: 12 Jul 2010, 10:23 pm »
Greetings Vinyl Lovers:
I came across this short film, about 7 minutes long, that documents purportedly the "world's largest record collection." It features Paul Mawhinney, the collector, and his more than one million pieces of vinyl! I hadn't seen a thread on this before, so I hope y'all enjoy it... That's a lot of records to fantasize about. How could you choose what to play next?

If I hit the lottery tomorrow, I'd so buy this entire collection.

The amount of history that is contained in that collection is just amazing; matched only by that guys love for the music he has collected over his lifetime.

I will be a shame to see it get broken up, destroyed, and see a lot of the music and lineage get erased.

Yeah, it's been for sale several times on eBay.  It was purchased once but the buyer bailed out.  He's been featured in a couple of productions and television shows, PBS and the like.  He was prominent in that vinyl tribute that I can't recall the name of, had a lot of record stores, Record Rama etc.

lazydays: Do tell. Give us more information about the Australian collection.

LetItroll: I had never seen this on eBay and had been unaware of the Record Rama story until I discovered this short film.

In 1996 I lost my original collection of vinyl in an arson set house fire. It was a big, bad bummer for me, and really knocked the LP wind out of my sails for many years. Over 2000 records, mostly first pressings, etc., very valuable... at least to me. I've since gotten back on the horse, after having told my self that I wouldn't collect again!

Wow, sorry about you collection, hope they caught the arsonist.  I've lost quite a few albums over the years to various thefts and moves, but nothing like that.

I no longer live in Pgh, but when I did I bought about a zillion LP's and CD's from Record Rama.  We never knew what a treasure we had, we just thought all cities had stores like that.  NYC and a few other places did/do, but they are scattered far apart.  I'll say we have a pretty vibrant vinyl scene in the Philadelphia/S. Jersey area, but nothing like Record Rama was.

who owns it I don't know, but this is what I can tell you; Much of the collection was purchased in the United States and shipped down there about three years ago. The shipping cost alone was several hundred thousand dollars! The size of the shipping containers was the kind we see on the back of semi tractors. There were three or four of them! Most the the venue was rock & roll, but there was maybe 25% vintage jazz. There was an even smaller amount of classical. My son was the shipper, and he did all the inspections and data entry on it. But just as interesting is the fact that the collection was just a part of another collection! The LP's he shipped came from three or four different sources; with the largest comming out of the southwest Ohio state region.

Does anyone have a link to the guy in Japan (I think) that has the huge audio gear collection? I remember seeing it a year or so ago, but can't seem to find it now. I thought it would go along good with this collection  :D

bside,   Thanks for posting that link.  I really enjoyed watching the video.  I am lucky enough to live about 20 minute away from a very large record store in St. Pete, FL. that is still going strong:  Banana's music.  Sometimes my wife refers to it as my second home.  Last time I talked to Doug, he estimated his inventory at close to 3 million LP's & 45's.
