Lost in Austen
« on: 23 Apr 2009, 06:37 pm »
Just saw it this past weekend.

An ITV 'mini-series' apparently (it is long for a movie at just over three hours). A modern Austen fan, Amanda Price, is transported back to Georgian England and is 'in' the novel Pride and Prejudice. She actually swaps places with Elizabeth Bennet, who winds up in 21st century London.

The reason why I bring it up here was the very clever take on the situation. It could have focused on the 'fish-out-of-water' aspect of a modern person dealing with the high manners of Edwardian society but it took a different path. While there are moments culture clash and anachronism used to good comedic effect, it was really a re-interpretation of the characters in the novel facilitated by the presence of an outsider/absence of Elizabeth. The other major characters are more fleshed out than was allowed by the original story with surprising (both pleasant and disturbing) results.

I rented it out of curiosity with the expectation of being thoroughly disappointed with a cheesy, schmaltzy, every-female-readers-fantasy  of taking Elizabeth's place.  Happily I instead experienced a clever retelling of the tale with genuine depth and nuance and a very high regard for Austen's original vision. Very highly recommended!
