New line up's
« on: 6 Feb 2009, 04:06 am »
Hi

I was at my dealers today and I was talking to another VSA owner (VR-7's) and we were talking about the way the model line up is heading and he heard that the Vr-4sr's will soon be no longer produced.

Has anyone else heard this? I find it hard to beleive that this series will end, having all the past history and sucess.

Curious....

Mike

I sure hope not. Next to the Jr it's our best seller. The VR-77 looks like it will be a real humdinger but it will be very pricey.

That was a large part of our discussion when we were talking about the jr's and the maple surrounds he was looking at.

Now that the VR-1, 2, and VR-4jrs are no longer being produced, it feels that the new line up is starting with the Unifield 3s, which is quite a bit higher price then any of the dicontinued models and there's really not that big of a difference between the 4sr's and 3's which makes me think it maybe true.

Hopefuly Albert, or VSA can comment as to whether this is fact or rumor

Thanks

Mike

It is amazing how rumors get started and get a life of their own. I talked to VS about the VR4 Sr. Albert said that there is no plan or thought of getting rid of the Sr. We talked about how the Sr compares to the new Jr Anni. and even the Unifield 3. The bottom line is Albert feels that the Sr has a very strong place in the VS lineup and will continue.

 Hope this clears things up.

 Blessings, Bob

Thanks for that reply

Yes it didn't make sense for VSA to get rid of that model, but then I know a few people were upset that the VR-1's aren't available anymore and have had to go with models that haven't the right finish as their mains

Thanks again (I was looking at either a VR-5 or a newer VR-4sr)

Manufacturers got to keep product coming.  They don't want to live on last year's revenue this year.  Neither do you.  Besides, seems like everybody has a flagship for 20k or better these days.  VS is highly regarded.  They can and should compete for that segment of the market.  All the hype about Magico slays me.  What kind of record do they have?  One dealer tried to justify their price by telling me about all the R&D they had done in the design of their enclosures.  Gimme a break.  I seriously doubt that their enclosures are anymore inert than Green Mountian Audio speakers and if it took them any longer to get there, don't see why I should have to pay for it.  But, I don't imagine that it did.  I admire their strategy, however.  Dealers will line up to sell product in this price range and will spend their own dollars to advertise.  Get on with your bad self, VS bros, you've earned the right to compete!  And the word discontinued doesn't mean anything about quality, does it.  The series won't end, internally.  It's just getting a nip and tuck here and there and a new name.  Bet the VR1, or whatever, will return, too.  Just my opinion.  Brave on.

The VR-1s were a great loss. Over here you won't find a single one on the used market anymore. The last one we tracked sold for its retail price. (we know where most of them are because of the 10 year transferable warranty)  Maybe Albert can come up with a 2-way in the 1,500 to 2,000 range. Never mind a two and a half way. Our experience was that everytime someone would come over to buy VR-2s they ended up digging deeper for 4jrs.  Then again.......a Jr head on a bass module with a single 8.5" woofer at $4,000 doesn't seem like a bad idea.

My dealer has atleast a 3 or 4 pairs of the VR-1's but I think most are in the light maple which aren't a great match for other finishes.
I actually listened to the last pair of 2's they have in stock on Thursday, just to remember what they sounded like before they go out the door, which is why I'm looking at their last pair of 5's while they're still in the one showroom.

Hello VSA owners,

We are not discontinuing the VR-4 SR model.  This rumor came about from a slight misunderstanding, when I told a recent customer that we have been shipping a "MK3" version for the past few months, which were all labeled as "Mk2."
Due to the huge success of the VR-5 Anniversary world-wide, I have installed some of the VR-5 Anniversary crossover technology into the VR-4 SR model in order to give it better driver integration.  All upcoming VR-4 SR will have Mk3 badges to reflect the small changes in crossover circuitry.  If you have purchased one of the Mk2's built after July 2008, you actually own a Mk3 version.

To be ruthlessly honest, the sonic change is a small upgrade, not a dramatic difference. In fact, there is a larger difference between a "raw" VR-4 and the same speaker with 500 hours on them.
The vast improvement in sound of the VR-5 Anniversary is the sum total of the upgraded drivers, different crossover topology and parts brands, along with internal cabinet modifications.  Although I've tried very hard to bring the VR-4 SR Mk3 to the level of the VR-5 Anniversary, it is actually impossible to do so, and would not make any commercial sense.  That's why we offer the upgrade program.

To explain this difference, let me use an analogy: a "normal" Porsche 911 and the magnificent Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera 4, which costs twice as much money, are both built on the same exact platform.  If you have driven both cars, you will perceive a huge similarity, but also a huge difference!  The VR-4 SR and the VR-5 series can be seen in the same exact light - there is a market for both models, and for the same reason that Porsche discovered.

Best regards, Albert Von Schweikert
