How to take a look inside a McIntosh MC275?
« on: 6 Feb 2009, 05:10 am »
I now have two MC275 running in mono driving the HT3

Does anyone knows how I can take out the black covers for the transformers as pictured below?

I desperately want to take a look at the power transformer, but this unit is built like a tank and weighed like a tank too :dunno:

Damn, G, you're still at it, aren't you?  Don't pack your stuff without giving me a little notice!

Jim, I've packed up my vinyl rig... only CD is spinning now.. but the MC275 make my CD sounds like vinyl.. if you come during this weekend, you can take a listen to the open baffle speaker :green:

What time on Saturday?  Please give me directions again coming out I10 in a PM.  I'll bring a couple of CD's if that's OK.

Carefully.   Seriously, those are very beautiful and great sounding amps. I had one in for a two week audition. Two of them?  Phew!   :thumb:  Enjoy.

If the reissues are anything like the 1950s version, the transformers are potted permanently within black tar epoxy, unlike the Chinese amps which often have loose hollow covers ;)  But inside they would look like quality C-core transformers.  Here are some at the factory (autotransformers for a solid state amp, but still C-core):

You can certainly take the bottom cover off pretty easily though and check out the circuitry.  Just don't touch anything, and watch for capacitors (i.e., don't die  :nono:)

Moscode has more control in the bass

MC275 has juicier midrange, the high are more extended, airy

I listen mainly to Jazz, vocal, classical so the bass aren't that important to me.
