Modifying drivers

For those of you willing to do some work on your drivers, you should have a look at Gary Pimm's new pages.
Very well documented work on the Alpha 6.  You can see what break in and mods did to the driver, step by step. (Kyrill you should like this)

The measurements were done on a large plywood (open) baffle.  Gary was able to tame this driver in an afternoon.
Gary may jump in to answer questions, or I may be able to from what he told me.

I did not get to hear these drivers, they were gone by the time I got there, but Gary says every change was noticeable to the ear.  The changes are very obvious in the graphs.  Be sure to mouse over to see before and after results.

That RTA is something that I need.  I need to take about 6-9db (at 12k on up) off of my AN S8 drivers as they are too strong in this area; giving music an unwelcome 'sibilance'.  I wish I had a setup to 'see' what the driver is doing.

I applied a thin layer of silicone to the rear of the main cone about an inch wide on the perimeter.  It did a great job (perhaps 75%!) of stopping high freq harshness but also seemed to suck the life out of the vocals.  I'm going to try and pay for the 'En' process for this driver and I hope that gets me what I want.

I guess I could just add a .10 coil to the driver to roll off those highs earlier but I wonder if some kind of cone treatment is in order - perhaps cutting off some of the whizzer.  I just don't know.
