Hello JimJ -

Yep, McIntosh components certainly make a visual statement (as well as sonic).  I can see why theres so much owners-pride tied into their products. Good shtuff.

I haven't listened to McIntosh for years.

30 years ago I owned a 6100 integrated (smaller, no dials, $700 for 70 wpc).  Smelled great, well built, my first step into the high end.  Unfortunately it did not provide audiophile grade sound.  Different but comparable to Rotel, a plow horse among thoroughbreds.

I'll be interested to read the review.

Ha!  Maybe something else in your system was amiss?  If the MA-6100 is a plow horse, the Audio Refinement Complete (YBA) is farm dog hobbling on three legs.

I'd be interested in seeing some modern reviews of vintage McIntosh and Marantz amplification.

Hi Zero

Wow, those alluring blue meters! Wish you could compare the McIntosh with an Accuphase? That would be one comparison I would really like to read.

Happy listening!

Best Regards

Opinions of McIntosh sonics may depend a lot on the vintage of the gear. Way, way back in the day McIntosh was considered the best in the world. Then sometime during the early solid state era, the management swore they would never "go back" to tubes under any circumstances. They sort of stood pat with most of their audio designs - which always measured well but lost the enthusiasm of audiophiles. Then, after some ownership changes, they rediscovered their roots, began building both retro and brand new tube designs as well as upgrading their SS stuff. The result is, IMHO, they are back among the very best both sonically and build wise (see reviews in TONE and elsewhere). Interestingly, although management changed, some of the current designs were executed recently by engineers that have been with them forever. And the current president is a long time employee as well. Maybe best of all, everything is still made in the USA.

Yes indeed. The new 300W MC2301 tube monoblocks, for example.

one thing i am curious about - what does mcintosh have in common w/anything related to "affordable audio"?   :o

doug s.,
trying to sell a really beautiful mac mr74 tuna - mac's best-ever s/s tuna, as far as their s/s offerings are concerned.  (but, still not sonically competitive w/many other less-expensive wintage tuna offering, imo...  how's that for marketing?  )

My favorite local dealer has one of these babies on display.  I like it a lot.

I think the Mac "house sound", call it a little rolled off and a little soft all around.  For me that puts Mac stuff right near the top of the list.
