EXTERNAL XO ENCLOSURE FOR LS6
« on: 29 Mar 2009, 02:05 pm »
Just to share the happy ending of a small project. This external enclosure is 60% filled with resin-bonded sand, internally covered with asphalt layer material. The box has an acrylic cover with 4 thumbscrews. This way, one can easily open the enclosure and "play" with the different bass positions of the XO". Probably is me trying to convince myself that all the time and work was a good decision, but I am really happy with the results in terms of sound quality. Don't know the reasons, but I can define the instruments position with more accuracy, the system can handle higher volume settings and the music sound more relaxed.
Well, it is sunday and it seems that I'm acting like a proud "father" :D

I agree with arthurs, that's a really nice XO set-up.  I like the thumb-screw idea for easy access and he acrylic lib is sweet too.

Thanks !! :)
And the fact that my daughters are finally getting the idea of how a loudspeaker works helps a little as well :)

I was thinking of an outboard X-over for a speaker kit and wondered what the advantages are other than easier access for future upgrading, mtce. and so on. Are there any electrical advantages? Are keeping internal vibrations from the X-over a big deal? Just wondering if there are positives, other than the obvious.

Thanks

Well, I don't know of electrical advantages. Now, sound wise, I can say that there are some BUT to my ears and in my room. As in any other audio "tweak" we enter the dangerous territory of personal and subjective perceptions. I like more what I'm hearing now than before, I have to say. :)
Thanks,

Santi, very cool!

I did something similar with a pair of x-ls speakers.  I can't get into specifics as it is a product we are working on but in the end, I could pick out the speaker with the 'special' network every time (one speaker had it, one didn't).  I had Mrs. Ninja randomly swap them around with me out of the room.  Our method is different than yours Santi but the result is basically the same.  No more microphonics from the caps so your speaker sounds cleaner.

Good stuff :)

Thanks Sean!!! :)
Only Mrs. Ninja would be able to swap and move around my LS6s, of course!! :D
Wishing you the best these days, my friend.
