Optimal box configuration for dual tempest 15's?
« on: 26 Dec 2003, 01:46 am »
I will be moving out of my current home and am pulling out the beloved Infinite Baffle based Tempests.  The new home cannot compensate for an IB configuration so I need to throw these into a box.  The question is what box configuration would be most musical for these two?  I'm looking for nice clean, ACCURATE bass.  Should I throw these into separate boxes and focus on placement, or throw them into a single box?  Again, these will be used for two channel stereo.  Thanks!

I'd say 2 separate sealed enclosures would be a great way to go.  Adire has a design on their site for a sealed enclosure with Qtc=.577, which will probably be fairly close to the sound of your IB sub.  Or course, the boxes will be big.  Adire's plans call for an enclosure that's 35"H (including 4" legs), 24"W x 24"D.

Here's all the info. on the various sealed Tempest designs:  http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/SealedTempestApplications.PDF

Brian,

I saw those and I'll probably be building a couple.  They are damn huge like you said.  I recently built a 16"x16"x16.5" sub for an old driver and that thing was friggin' heavy as hell.  Interesting to see what these weigh.  Thanks.

Might want to replace two of the posts with wheels if you build those beasts.  I'd consider building them to lay down.  Do you need a 3ft by 4 ft or 2 ft by 6 ft coffee table?
