Fet-Valve integrated amp possible?
« on: 26 Jan 2009, 02:54 pm »
Hi Frank,

Perhaps a silly question but...would there ever be a possibility of offering a Fet Valve integrated amp?  Ideally, I would imagine something like this: lower power than the standard Fet Valve amplifiers (to perhaps make a bit more room in the chassis), use the larger chassis (again, more room), add a preamp section with tone controls.

Or perhaps it would be more 'do-able' to do a Fet Valve preamp (again, w/tone controls) in the large chassis married to an Insight amp...?

I'm guessing it's just not phycially and/or economically feasible but wanted to ask.

Thanks,
Joe

A Fet Valve Integrated is not practical.  It would be very expensive for its power rating.  It still would need all the power supplies.  There are, for your information, seven of them;  basic high voltage high current supply for the power mos-fets, four high voltage low current regulated supplies for the tubes, and two high current low voltage regulated supplies for the the tube heaters.  This requires a custom power transformer with three sets of secondary windings and more.  All this expense would still be there with a low powered version that could fit in a control ampliifier size chassis.  Scaling down the power and size would not significantly scale down the cost to build.
