The Speed Box II
« on: 15 Jan 2009, 07:39 pm »
Hello everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with the speedbox... I've got an RM5 SE, it sounds... good.  It can use an improvement along with a good phono stage - the phono Box II is okay...  Is this thing worth it...  Is the Speedbox II SE worth stepping up to?

One of the things that is constant in "the vinyl circle" is the need for speed control.  Having said that I use a speed box II and can't imagine spinning records with speed control.  If think you need the extra amount of speed control then by all means get the SE.  But I can definitely recommend the Speed Box II.  Some times I do think about upgrading to the SE version but it cost over $600.00

I use a Speed Box II on my 1Xpression.  I had the Xpression for about a year before adding the Speed Box.  I didn't think it would do much and wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for the 30 day trial period I got.  It made a huge difference in my system.  It took my table to the next level or two.  After owning it for about 2 years or so, I unplugged it to see how it would sound without it.  It sounds awful in comparison.

I've heard a bunch of systems with outboard speed controllers.  Every one of them had a profound and positive impact, without exception.  I haven't heard the Speed Box and Speed Box SE side by side to say if its worth the extra money.  Most online places offer a 30 day return policy.  Maybe buy both and compare at home?  Music Direct carries them.  Not sure of where you are though.

I had a Speed Box II SE. A great little piece, but be careful: I liked it so much that I had to upgrade to a VPI SDS. This hobby gets expensive.

I use a Speedbox SE on my Doug Olsen custom plinth with an old Thorens 150 inserted.  The Olsen mod has an IEC power connect from the turntable to the Speedbox.  With Speedbox inserted, the sound of this table jumped 10 fold.  Better dynamics, more tansparent and resolving and easily bettered my Linn LP12.
