Art Dio signal interruption
« on: 21 Nov 2003, 01:43 pm »
Hi everybody, first post. My issue is what can I do about Art Dio signal disruption. I had the unit modded by Bolder Cable and ordered the recommended digital cable from them. I have had the unit approximately one year. Initially I would turn the Dio off after every use and had the usual trouble getting the int.-ext sample rate to hold. Bolder advised me to leave my cdp on constantly so that I wouldn't lose the signal. This worked until recently and now I get a kind of static (the green light flickers) but not a complete signal disconnect. Obviously this drives me batty. Any help will result in worshipful appreciation.

Dennzio,

There are several possibilities.

1 - Static electricity/grounding. I don't know what your transport is but when I used a DI/O with a CAL Delta I would have small dropout's. It turned out the combination was sensitive to static in the house. I live in a dry climate and in the winter months it became worse. I ended up connecting a ground wire from the DI/O to the transport and that took care of the problem.

2 - It's possible that something is wrong with the digital cable. Not likely but possible. I would contact Wayne at Bolder Cables and discuss the problem. Try another cable if you have one.

3 - It's possible that something is failing in the DI/O. Again, it's probably best to contact Bolder.

4 - Another place to look is the CDP you are using for a transport. It may be on it's way out. Do you have another source to try with the DI/O?

luck,

Mike G.

It seems to be a design fault of the DIO.  When I had mine they were extremely sensitive to static electricity and the audio would cut out with any manner of ESD.  Never saw anything like that before.  The ground wire idea might be something to try.  If the drop outs are intermittent and not a matter of losing sync entirely I would bet that it is static.

Stan Warren told me one of the best things we could do for this unit is to get another inch of clearance between the boards and the chassis.  I looked into hammond boxes, and found one that would likely have worked (same depth).  never ordered it or tried it.  I am surprised that nobody has gutted the dio and repackaged it in some larger box.  Seems like a better platform for mods?  If memory serves, I seem to recall that Wayne may have been talking about dropping the boards into a CDP as a standalone?  That was ages ago though, and probably not cost-effective.  Back in the day when this unit was the flavor of the month, perhaps we could have gotten DIYCable to find us a chassis and have it custom drilled so we could all play with extra damping and a bigger box.  It would be hard getting something without even LOWER WAF though!

I wonder if a destat gun might help? I disconnected the cable and cleaned the inputs and the cable, then turned the cable a half turn as somebody suggested, and so far, no static (about 5 hours of play).
