let me introduce my system.
« on: 28 Dec 2008, 12:44 pm »
hello, first time to say hello here.

my name is kim dong hyun in Pusan South korea.

i use hagerman trumpet phonostage from hagerman's products

here is my system introduction.

i recently saw video file in the YOUTUBE.

someone here posted his system, username is amandare? maybe incorrect. sorry for my poor memory.

through computer speaker, the sound is quite good. his system is quite different from me. but i got interested in this kind of OB style spekaer.

so i bought used fostex fx200 unit here and made OB speaker from drawings of Je labs.

i used plywood 18t.

sound is fantastic.

bass is quite astonishing and most important thing is that sound is alive from note to note.

it is very vivid sound and imaging is 3d like.

just seems as if the players are in my room.

i drove it with 6n1p srpp el34 triode connected single ended poweramp. it is built by me using sacthailand transformers

preamp is silvaweld swp500 which is full function preamp. made in korea. but i modified it .

phonostages are

quick silver phonostage, hagerman trumpet , and silvaweld swp500.

turntables are scheu premier mk2, and loth x othello.

cartridges are audio technica mono LP, denon 103, and last goldring eroica lx.

step up tranformers are sowter 8055 ( for audio technica mono ) which goes to trumpet.

and jks mc transformer ( made in korea ) for denon 103 which goes to quick silver phonostage.

and last goldring eroica goes to mc phono input of silvaweld swp500.

tonearms are scheu classic 12 inch longarm which is heavily modified by me,( for denon 103)
umpingo wood unipivot tonearm 12 inch for audio technica mono LP
and last loth x carbon fiber unipivot tonearm for goldring eroica lx.

cdp is cheap inkel (korean brand ) cdp and dac is 47lab shiragaki copied nonos dac which is made by me.

sound is quite smooth and dynamic.

but most of all, it sounds like real music.

thanks for good speaker building idea

i attached the photos ( another speaker is lynn olson ariel mk2 )

so far, i have used lots of phonostages and step up transformers

for example, hagerman trumpet and diyed cornet and bugle, kandk phonostage ( old version ), aesthetix rhea, supratek syrah, loesch phonostage, steve bench riaa5, Fi audio Yph, klyne sk6, motif 7, electrocompaniet 3, quick silver phonostage, gary pimm phonostage ( diyed by me ) je labs phono ( i made it with 12ax7 though ), ear 834p thorstenized, CAT SL-1, accuphase c-100, etc... i cannot remember .

but i sold much of them, and keep trumpet, quick silver ( i replaced all the signal cap and riaa cap, and powersupply electrolytic with film cap and that improved it very much. i think quick silver much higher level than ear 834p any variation ), gary pimm diy phono, steve bench riaa 5 phono. and silvaweld swp500.

and still working on tubecad aikido phonostage and linestage.

i have owned many step up transformers
tribute, s&b 103, sowter 8055, lundahl 9206, sacthailand , diyhifisupply amorphous mc step up, old sansui trans, AEE transformer, electraprint audio(1:20),
i sold almost all of them, and keep sowter and jks and electraprint and old sansui.
they sound just different, not better nor worse.

i always follow Jim hagerman's cartridge loading.
i found that his recommendation on primary loading is many good effect on high frequency taming of mc cartridge.
i donot use secondary loading , it degrades too much .... sound just becomes lifeless.
just use primary loading about 300- 500 ohm across primary of transformer. that is all that needed for good sound .

i would like to thank Jim for quite correct quidance about transformer loading and his circuit .
i learnt quite a lot from his circuit.
i donot just copy his circuit. but i learnt many things about powersupply design and phonostage design.

and thank amandare for quite good speaker posting in youtube.

it is the best speaker ever i have owned. ( merlin vsm-se with ac bam is only one of many examples, this fostex ob has fuller and controlled bass than merlin and image is much better )

i took photo of my system. but how can i post it ?

best

kim

Welcome and thanks for posting!   :)

I'm hoping someone else will come along and help you technically as I don't have an "easy" answer...

Hi Kim,

You need to upload the photos to an online storage site such as

http://photobucket.com/

set the security of that album to "everyone" then post the adress where the photo is located as either a link (right click the photo,go to properties which has the actual location of the photo, highlight it,click copy then paste here) or if you want the photos to show up here "bracket" the link (as above) with first [/img] (remove the bracket here, only used it so the exampe will show up instead of treating it like a jpeg),then the actual link as above, followed by [/img] and your pics will show up here

Hope this helps

Rick

Okay, the example won't show up as it was meant but is instead being treated as a meta tage so in "longhand" it is :

Baracket-img-bracket then the link then bracket-slash-img-bracket

and you should be good to go

[ img ]  add HTTP:// link   [ /img ]

To get this format up in a post for pictures, just use the image box above which would be the box just below the Italic Box. :thumb:

you can see my system here

http://board.wassada.com/iboard.asp?code=cassiopeia&mode=view&num=4571&page=0&view=t&qtype=&qtext=&part=av

hagerman trumpet is located behind the OB speaker.

sorry to Jim, but there is no room in my audio deck for trumpet .

the tall speaker is lynn olson ariel mk2 speaker which sounds good, but OB speaker sounds more realistic .

actually, i bought trumpet phonostage twice,

at first, my friend asked me to sell it to him, so i have to buy another one here used audio circle like audiogon.

i am quite satisfied with trumpet , and also very satisfied with quick silver phonostage.

if you change the cheap cap of quick silver phonostage with better caps, it really sings. i also replaced electrolytic caps in powersupply with solen fastcap. it was also quite good tweak.

i am building tubecad aikido phonostage and linestage , when i complete them, i will post it here too.

best

Hey Kim, welcome aboard. Nice path you have gone and thanks for sharing, glad you like the OB everyone should have one.

Here is my first one.

It's a MJK design
http://www.quarter-wave.com/OBs/OB_Design.pdf

For those intersted in Abe's you tube videos.

http://www.youtube.com/user/amandaraer

Nice touch Abe, it's a DIY heaven.  I am getting closer to building the JEL pre, it's going to have it's own twist to allow a IEC and NAB eq for a Otari MX5050 RTR deck. I'll provide more info when the project is done and tested if you are interested.

Hope all of this isn't to off topic for Jim's site.
