Bugle enclosure finished
« on: 22 Dec 2008, 10:39 pm »
I gave my son a Bugle phono preamp several years ago. He's been making do, poor baby, with a pair of wall warts as the power supply.  For Christmas this year I bought him the power supply and made him an enclosure for the preamp and power supply as well. I'm happy with the look and sound.

I had no problem with the power supply, it worked on the first try. Unfortunately, when I removed the stock kit rca's from the board, I lifted the trace on the output. It took me a while to find that. I just added a little more solder on the bottom of the board, and that seems to be good for now. I'm not sure if that will hold long term.

I was confused about the physical wiring  of the -15V source to the preamp.   +/- to -/+ ?!?  I couldn't tell you how it's hooked up, but it works. The lifted trace added to my confusion - always tougher to debug when there is more than one problem.

I used a piece of figured birch, and finished it with Watco natural Danish oil. Hard to tell the scale from the pictures, but dimensions are 12" W x 4" H x 4" D.

Very nice.
Are those hand cut dovetails?

Beauty :thumb:  I love the smell of oiled red Birch almost as much as I love the look.

Wayne, I used the Porter-Cable 4212 jig. I just got through 48 half blind dovetail joints for my pantry drawers, and thought I would try the through dovetail for the bugle box.  I made the joints a little too oversized and tried to use a planar to get the pins flush to the side.  I took a hammer to my first effort  because the planar caused major chip out.

Someday I'll mature.

Although I've spent some time working on some kitchen cabinets, this was my first completed woodworking project. Edit: I guess I am not including the GR-Research speakers I made because those were MDF.

One thing that surprised me was the beauty of the Birch piece I picked. I always thought of birch in the context of a cheap veneer for plywood.
