Step up/down transformers - leave on?
« on: 18 Dec 2008, 03:18 pm »
I recently bought an M&K powered sub, that happens to be a 220v unit.

The seller included a step transformer - I assume in this case it is stepping up 110v to 220v.

Can I leave this transformer on, or should I cycle it on and off as needed, with the TV?

If it's fused, I couldn't see a problem. Why would you want to leave it on?

It is fused Mark.

In terms of the installation, and with WAF in mind (this is in the family room on the main floor, not in the basement lab!) the power transformer is placed such that the switch is not really convenient to reach, so as to minimize cable runs across the floor etc.

If I can just leave it on wtih a clear conscience I would like to.

If I HAVE to cycle the power on the transformer, I might be able to do it, but asking her to turn the sub on and off is unlikely to work.  The sub comes on automatically when fed a signal, so it would be nice to just leave on the transformer so the sub comes on when the TV is turned on.

If it were my house and my situation, I would leave it on. Just as I do the amp and pre that I have hooked up to the T.V's sound system. Convienience for the wife, of course.
