Grado Stylus Removal
« on: 17 Jan 2009, 07:00 pm »
Hello all:
I am having a problem removing the stylus from the Grado Green cartridge.
I've looked at the illustration, that came with the cartridge:

But, that is simplified drawing.
What I need to know is how large is the part (guard) that is in front of the stylus assembly.

Can the guard be pried off first, then remove the stylus?
Thank for any replies
Tim

I only see red X's where your pictures should be, but the stylus guard slides forward off the front of the cartridge body; since it is attached to the cartridge body and not the removable stylus assembly, the guard must be removed before removing the stylus.  The stylus removal tool makes removing the stylus much easier, though it can be done with your fingers.  If you're having trouble (and you have a local dealer), do what I do:  just take the whole cartridge to your dealer, have him examine the stylus for wear, and let him make the switch if a new stylus is needed.

I've done this many times on the Grado Green, Blue, Black, Silver, Red and Gold. You do not remove the guard. It is not designed to be removed. If you look at the photo you posted ( not the line drawing ) hold the cartridge body between finger and thumb. Take your other finger and thumb and take hold of the stylus assembly. Keep the cartridge in the position the photo shows and pull the stylus assembly down to the 5 o clock position. You might need to wiggle it a little side to side to ease it out. Fitting the new one is simply a reversal of taking the old one out.
