Linn Sondek Isolation
« on: 15 Dec 2008, 10:42 pm »
Hi All,

I recently acquired a mid-80's Sondek. It's being tuned and will be back in my eagerly waiting hands in a few days. I will be putting the table in small wood audio cabinet.

Do I need to set the table on isolation feet or perhaps the entire audio cabinet?

Thanks,

Tim

You may encounter quite a few problems, one of which is footfall. Is the existing cabinet stable, or does it rock back and forth. Is the floor under it moving when you walk near by. These will be issues you may need to address if bad, long before worrying about footers, although a good isolation base may help if you play your music loud or the table is near a speaker (which is bad).

Table is about 5 feet from speakers (Totem Arros).  The cabinet is pretty solid -- it has Jolida 1501 integrated amp and Jolida CD player at the bottom as well as a 1970's Yamaha tuner.  The cabinet is sitting on carpet.  I did a quick test and had to jump (leaving the ground) to get the cabinet to move noticeably.  There's a very slight amount of movement if I step very hard -- by not much at all.

the only way you can tell for sure is after you set the tturntable up and start playing it. You may well find that the cabnet has become an antenna picking up vibrations from the speakers. Also the shelf it sets on needs to be pretty stout. Lastly are you having any heat problems with that Jolida amp in the cabnet? Tubes and heat don't mix.

I should have the table back on Friday so can "test" then.  No heat issues.  The cabinet is open in the front and the Jolida's do not run hot.  When I first got the table, I had it sitting on the Jolida's which were sitting on the floor.  Only played two albums, but had no issues during that time.
