Like a million other people I have the Krauss / Plant cd "Raising Sand."   Overall I like the album,  but I freakin love the fourth track called "Poly Come Home."   I've heard it described as skeletal,  haunting, etc. but am wondering:  does this type of sound have a particular name?   Are there any bands, solo artists, or producers who have other albums out there that have this sound?    The only other time I've heard something similar is on a Chris Isaak album.....Thanks for any info.!   GR

"Poly Come Home"....similar sound (to me)....Cowboy Junkies.... :thumb:

More info....allmusic...
"Plant is a Gene Clark fan, and so it's not a surprise, but the choices are: "Polly Come Home" and "Through the Morning, Through the Night" come from the second Dillard & Clark album from 1969 with the same title as the latter track. The first is a haunting ballad done in an old-world folk style that Clark would have been proud of. It reflects the same spirit and character as his own White Light album, but with Plant and Krauss, the spirit of Celtic-cum-Appalachian style that influenced bluegrass, and the Delta blues that influenced rock, are breached."

Cowboy Junkies - aaarrrrggghhhh! They make me want to cut my wrists with a butter knife. I affectionately call them suicide music.

Lots of fans, great sound and music I can take for about a track or two. But after that the "haunting beautiful muisic" without any change in pace, becomes just too much of the same thing over again.

YMMV

Bob, I agree.  Nice recordngs they make, but the music is not music to me.  So is this AK track really like CJs or just in that vain?  If too close I might skip the album.

She does have a beautiful voice, and she's not bad to look at. But as far as the music itself, it feels like the train never leaves the station. The engine is purring along, the pistons are starting to pump, but the conductors just can't seem to get all the passengers to board so they can get underway.

Don't you just love analogies?

Will Oldham has a similar sensibility but with an Appalachian/Old Timey feel. Look for his music under Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace Music and his own name. Also, check out The Be Good Tanya's, Gillian Welch and the Red House Painters.
