I am curious about my fellow AVA owners, and perhaps this is more of a survey, but, on average, how loud do you listen to your music? If we could use the clock hands (at least it's a reference point) with 7 o'clock being no volume, where are you usually at? And do you think the control is at the right position for the sound level being heard?

Feeding a phono cartridge with a 4.6mV output rating into my OmegaStar PAT-5, and using an Insight 240 to drive Vandersteen 1C's (90dB efficiency rating), the useable range for me, depending on individual record and time of day, is about 7:40 to 8:40--two to five clicks up from fully turned down.  I am an apartment dweller, so moderate to low volumes are the norm for me.

Do I think the control is at the right position?  Well, as long as I can get the volume I want, it doesn't much matter.  It does seem odd to be using so little of the volume pot's range of motion, and would be even more cramped with a higher output cartridge (been thinking about a Rega model, with about a 7mV rating).  Then again, I used a higher volume setting with a 3.2mV cartridge, a Linn LK2 power amp, less efficient Linn Sara speakers, and while living in a house where I could crank the volume without bothering others--there are lots of system and usage variables.

Some AVA preamps have a mute switch that can be used with the more efficient speakers to gain some volume-setting adjustment room on the low end.  Also, while some volume pots have poor channel balance tracking at their lower settings (such as a client's NAD), I have not found that to be the case with my OmegaStar PAT-5.

Since receiving my beautiful Salk SongTowers with ribbon tweeters in pau ferro veneer, I am not a 10:00-10:30 guy anymore (with CD playing into Insight DAC).  The previous speakers, Spendor S3/5, are 84db and 8 ohm.  Additionally, they lack any bass.  The SongTowers are 88db and 4 ohm, and they have bass.  Consequently, I haven't turned the volume past 9:00.

Due to the low input sensitivity of the 440H, I'm now running my preamp output level at 85.9. Speakers are rated at 85db/8 ohms.

For those using a meter, the weighting makes a big difference.  For music, 100 dB SPL (unweighted) is not as loud as 100 dBA.

As for 9:00 being too loud, that would bother me.  Unless there's some reason it has to be that way I'd want less gain or less sensitive speakers.

It's awesome that, unless I missed it, nobody seems to have heard clipping from an AVA rig before their ears gave out or the cops came!

That is awesome, huh?!  :thumb:

In one of the Audio Basics, Frank writes of playing the 1812 Overture to clipping on any amp. Aside from being amazingly informative, and pretty darned funny, Frank likens playing this song at high volume to driving your new car into a wall to check out well the car is built.

Well, after reading that, I just had to do it, right?

Man, I don't know what the hell you'd have to do to get an Ultra 550 to clip, but with 90dB speakers, I don't want to, (and couldn't) find out!

Have fun,
Jerry

I am currently waiting for upgrades to Insight pre-amp, amp and DAC.   With Mag 3.6's, I agree with many here. In my listening room (no special room treatments) I'd say: 8-9 for reading or TV/DVD listening, 10-11 for cranking tunes, 12-1 when wife not home and gigging along with ACDC.   With my Omega series equipment, I could not believe the "air" and lack of effort the AVA electronics have in their behavior with the Maggie's.   I am living on a many years old unmodified Hafler DH200 and SAE pre-amp while awaiting the upgrades and the difference is startling; even for one as me who doesn't think he has much of a discerning ear.

Happy Holiday Season to all the AVA fans out there.

I pulled out some of my older classical CDs (such as Mozart's Symph 29) and realized that I had to crank it up to past 10 o'clock to get the volume that I wanted.  (With most of my recent content, I don't get above 8:30; 9:00 at the most.)

Then it dawned on me; it really depends on the recorded source.  No doubt the audio engineers on this particular recording cared about quality, and engineered the CD at -10 dB reference.  Most of today's pop-culture stuff is engineered to be at -0 dB reference.

So we can't really talk unless we're talking apples w/ apples I guess.

Interestingly, I have a few CD's that sound fine at moderate levels but when I really turn up the volume, i.e. just before my tiny little woofers bottom out, they sound as close to live as you can get. They are Paul Simon's There Goes Rhymin' Simon (haven't heard the remastered version) and America's Holiday (though I did buy this one is Europe so I don't know if it's the same mastered American version.)

A few other CD's that sound like the performers ARE THERE when played really loud (with the lights out) -

Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster - (standard Verve) though the piano doesn't sound real

Zoot Sims At Ease

Junior Mance at the Village Vanguard

Bill Evans - Waltz for Debbie

My Gallo's are watt sponges so I need it at around 9 for casual and 10 or 11 if listening to well recorded live music with the Omega ss . And then number 1 pulls in the driveway and its down to 7.5 .

Usually 9 to 9:30, with Ultra DAC, Ultra SL, Ultra 550 into Gallo 3.1.

For background listening while reading, I usually set the small box T8 at 9:00.  For serious listening it's 11-12.  Any more than that and my 62+ year old ears start sounding raucous.  I have a pair of 240s: one for the mains (Maggie MMGs) and the other for the B&W Acoustitune passive sub.  When Frank comes through with the Insight differential preamp/DAC, the amps will switch to one for the left, the other for the right channel.  The Acoustitune will remain part of the setup because it has separate drivers for each channel, making it the only single sub I know of that is balanced output ready. aa
