Ultra Dac Review
« on: 21 Nov 2008, 02:51 pm »
I just read a review of the Ultra DAC by Doug Schroeder. The review strikes me as kind of strange. The reviewer seemed to go out of his way to repeatedly "blast" AVA for not using the IEC power connection on the unit, even challenging FVA to install one fjust for his ears.   Very little of the review ws devoted to the musical presentation of the unit and its attributes/deficits. I don't own an Ultra DAC but I fully intend to after reading the review.

You see, the reviewer is the kind of guy who probably grew up on replaceable power cords, pricey interconnects and DAC specs, in other words, a spec and gadget man. At work, we call this guy a catalog engineer. He is on a power cord soapbox.

I would suspect that AVA owners are the kind of Audiophiles that just plain love music and consider it an important part of their lives. I do not consider AVA gear to be unattractively packaged, or technically dificient in any way.

Oh well, enough said, here is a link to the review. I 'm sure it will generate some smiles out there.  http://www.dagogo.com/AudioVanAlstineUltraDAC.html

I think AVA products would sound much better if they were offered in bright primary colors.

A 2-inch thick faceplate hogged out of rhodium would also be a big improvement. That, and externally-mounted tubes with crystal "towers". Please get to work on that right away.

I need to get busy and apply to the government for some of that bailout money so I can afford the rhodium billets.

Should the towers look like these?
