taking high level signal from ref 9 speaker outputs for sub xover

Seems to me this came up some time ago but either it was not resolved or I can't find the thread.

I need to able to connect the passive crossover (which has level and crossover frequency controls) of my 14 year old Hsu subs' to the speaker level outputs of my Ref9 SE V2. This little box has speaker level inputs on a terminal strip and RCA outputs to go to the stereo amp powering the subs.

I seem to remember a trick little circuit that would enable this being shown on AC. Am I fantasizing? Has anyone done this without blowing up the x-over?

Seems I was thinking of the "magic box" by Ed Schilling of the Horne Shoppe, but this is not what I need - it provides line level outs. It does seem that Sumiko imports what I am looking for - I will find out tomorrow - they call it a "Digital High Level Cable" that adapts the REL sub high level connection to the outputs of a class D amplifier. It is a special order item and I hope to know more by tomorrow. I will report back if anyone cares!

Yes, it is basically a capacitor to block the DC offset on the + and - speaker terminals from ground.

Russell Dawkins

How critical is the value of the capacitors, Jason? Do you need four?

I spoke to the Sumiko distributor today, and she played their cards close to their chest, but did intimate that capacitors were involved and they had to experiment to find the right values, but apparently had not used Nuforce as one of the amps to experiment with. She was also under the misapprehension that I owned a REL subwoofer and her attitude cooled further when she discovered this was not the case. The cables were designed and are made in California.
These cables are intended for REL in terms of connection scheme - I get the impression that the input to the REL may be by RCA.

Hsu is trying to get me to buy their high quality crossover for $500, but that's all my subs and driving amp are worth, so a cheap fix would be welcome.

Greetings,

I think this may be what you are looking for. I don't own one, but knew that this existed.

You're very welcome and I too wish you a blessed, peaceful and renewing Christmas!

Russell Dawkins

Oooops!
I just noticed that the outputs from this device are line level, when what I need are speaker level outputs, as the passive crossover for the subs works from a speaker level input.

The search continues...

Connect the amp's speaker +R terminal to a HIGH QUALITY NONE POLAR (ie no direction) FILM CAPACITOR (20uF, 100V) and then to the sub woofer input.
Connect the amp's speaker +L terminal to a another capacitor and then to the sub woofer input.
Connect the sub woofer ground to any unused RCA ground on your preamp.

Thanks, Jason we will try this since it sounds like at worst, if it didn't work, nothing could be damaged.

A happy Christmas season to you, too.

Russell,

Please update how your experience went connecting your Nuforce to sub.

Thanks,

Kenobi

A raft of other diversions has prevented me from trying this yet, Kenobi. It looks perfectly safe though and I wouldn't hesitate to try it through fear of damage to my equipment.
