A few shots around the Pumpkin Patch
« on: 20 Oct 2008, 06:37 pm »
The weekend before last, the family and I went to "Rambach's Farm and Pumpkin Patch". I brought the D40 along with the Nikkor 200mm and here's the results (submitted for your approval ).

Since this is an old farm, they've got various pieces of old equipment for the children to play on. This one is an old fire truck from 1937 (IIRC).

Rusty steering wheel and cracked windscreen of the fire truck.

Can you spot the non-conformist among us? I call this photograph "Nathan stands out"

I though about titling this one "Windmill with ivy", but that seems to lack a sence of originality.

This is hanging about 25 feet up from the roof of a barn, just screaming to have it's picture taken.

I did this one because the wife likes to make photo collages. I thought it would serve as a nice background for the kiddies autumn pics.

Kinda neat, had some potencial, but the photographer screwed it up.

Again, this one is kinda neat. The end result isn't as good as I had hoped for, but you get the idea.

Ok, what do you think? Don't be too hard on me, I'm a newbee.

Thanks for the pictures Bob.  Took my kids this past weekend to The Patch.  They had a lot of fun, especially with the corn maze.

Nice job Bob.  :thumb:

Don't know if you are aware but there is a great set of pictures waiting to be taken just up the road from you. Head out Hwy 30 to Byrnesmill Road (its in House Springs). Go down Byrnesmill until you get ready to cross over the 'new' bridge over the Big River. From there you'll see the 'old' Byrnesmill bridge. Just up from it is a restored mill that sits over a spillway. Get out of your truck and navigate your way to the river bank. Down there you'll find tons of great picture opportunities.

I shot this years ago on film. It was this time of year where the trees are a blaze with color. My pics turned out great. In fact I blew several of them up and hung them on our walls for a number of years.

You ought to buzz up there sometime soon before all the leaves drop. It really is a great subject to shoot. I forget how the light sits, and what time of day its best.

Oh, take an old pair of shoes. The banks can get muddy.
Oh, oh, I bet the old bridge would make cool subject too.

Hey Bob,

Great picture.  Do you have an uncompressed / higher resolution / bigger (preferably much bigger) version of this one? :D

Scott -Thanks for the complement, and the recommendation for a location to shoot. I didn't know that was there, cool stuff!

Wind Chaser - Yes, I have the original file still on the D40's SD card. If memory serves, they're stored as an 8Meg file. I upload to Photobucket, but they automatically lower the res for me.  Not sure if there's a way to override that, but haven't found a way yet. I'll give you the photo, but not sure how I would deliver it. (I don't think I can email 8Meg??? ).

Abe - Thanks man. There's more "Pumpkin day pics" at the link in my signature. Check the upper left corner of Photobucket for an album titled "My attempt at photography". The other photo's in there kinda suck, so I didn't show them here (including ALL the photo's of the kids  :duh:). In all, there's several individual albums with various "stuff", but the majority are not "artsy photography", there just pictures of things I thought where worthy of showing at some point in time.

I've got three "old school" lenses on loan from a buddy, when life allows me to I'd like to dedicate some serious time to taking pictures.

Yes I can definitely see potential on the horizon for financial expenditures.
My wife won't mind, I'm sure of it.

If you guys want to send large files, try 'yousendit.com'. You upload to an external server. Your recepient gets an email w/ a link where they can download the file. It's even free, though you have to register if you use it more than a couple of times. If you send multiple files you have to put them in a folder and compress w/ 'zip'. Actually, it's a good idea to zip any file, as it helps keep the resource fork intact. I don't work for, or own any part of the company, but am a happy user.

Good to know, thanks for that.  :thumb: Although I'm not sure if Wind Chaser still wants it or not?

There is no bad picture only what you do with it makes it good or bad. Nice pics though. :green:

Bob,

Yes I do, but I forgot you were on dial up.  I meant to tell you that I'd even be happy with a 1600 X 1200 JPG.

gixxerific - Thank you very much!

Wind Chaser - I've got DSL now, so it's not a problem. I can use the website Dr. Photo mentioned, but it wants a "To:" email address.

Wind Chaser - I've got DSL now...

Well that explains he mystery of You'll hate me for this......  You shouldn't be able do that on dial-up.  Maybe the limitations of dial-up isn't so bad after all?  Thanks - I'll PM you with my address.

And thank you too gixxerific. :thumb:

I think my favorite is the first one because of the vivid blue and how it seems so fresh in contrast with the fading paint color.

The subtle nonconformity of the pumpkin is cool too.

Bob, those are great shots!  Keep it up.  Getting into photography can be a daunting task, but keep firing away.  The new digital SLRs make it much easier for us regular guys to get into the hobby.

I really like your first shot of the fire truck emblem.  The framing makes it really interesting.  It would have been so easy to shoot it symmetrically, but that would've sucked all the life out of it.

Agreed fellas, I like the emblem on the firetruck as well. The start contrast between the blue and red really caught my eye. Of course it helps that I swiped my forearm across the emblem to get the dust off before I took the shot.
Thanks again for the complements guys! As a novice (very) It's good to hear confirmation everybody else "sees" what I see and appreciates it.

Wind Chaser - I received your address, thank you. I'm at work and the photo is at home on the camera. I didn't spend much time online this weekend which is why you haven't received it yet.

Bob

p.s. Nathan - Did you notice the lack of an apostrophe? Did I do that correctly?

Hey Bob, that's cool.  Whenever, there's certainly no panic at my end.

When are you going to post more pictures?

Wind Chaser, of all the picture I took that day, the only ones that turned out acceptable where the ones I posted. There's a few more here, but none worthy of bragging about. As far as I'm concerned, the rest look below average as far as quality goes.  :(
