Revisiting the Dac-60
« on: 11 Nov 2008, 03:23 am »

Here's a shot of the latest mod to my Dac-60.
After many attempts to get the high end extension and dynamics I was after, this is by far the best effort to date. The purists may balk at using an opamp vs. a resistor for I/V conversion, but I got to thinking why The creator of the pcm 1704 specified this. Burr Brown even goes so far as to say it is critical to choose the apropriate -opamp- for optimal dynamic performance from the 1704.

Hi Mark,

I read your efforts of modding the DAC-60 this past spring/summer and it sounds like you're "there"..... for now  It never ends does it?  I have a Pacific Valve modified DAC-60 and am interested to hear what your final mods were and if there were any surface mount modifications.

I won't have time until after my basement is finished but I would eventually like to modify my DAC further.

Thanks.

Tom

It never ending is all part of the sickness, er, hobby. :D
Haven't done any surface mount mods.
IMO, the mods with the most return for investment are coupling caps and tubes, (easiest), low pass filter and active I/V conversion.
I'm going to try a different pair of coulping caps and pretty up the wires to the I/V board. Hopefully, after that, I'll be done...for now. Exept for more tube rolling.

I put a matched pair of Amperex JAN tubes (green writing) in my DAC-60 and it improved the sound quite a bit over the stock tesla tubes.  I now know why people like tube rolling so much.  You can really modify the sound to your taste.

Cheers,
Tom

In my system, Amperex 6922's, (Orange Globe U.S.A), were a step above the stock Sovtek's, Jan Philips and even vintage Philips Heerlen made 6922 S.Q's. Most evident is palpability in vocals.
I'd like to try Amperex white label U.S 6922. I also have a pair of 7dj8's from a fellow member here, that I will plug in and listen to once I find time.
