Dipole Side speakers for HT
« on: 4 Nov 2008, 11:16 am »
Guys, I would like to hear your ideas and experiences on this idea please.

I'm currently building a large HT, but in the current room, I'll have so sit quite close to the sides, so I've been wondering if a dipole might not fit the bill.

I have a sixpack of Eminence A15 and two PAudio 15CX38 and four BM8CXA coaxials. Reading MJK's U and H frames thread, it seems like I could use 4 A15's and either of the PAudio coaxes on a fairly flat panel, WWC. I will be sitting in the null axis, I have electronic xovers (and am an EE) and a ton of poweramps.

If I used the 8CX, I could mount one pair on the baffle as per normal and take the HF drivers from the other pair, add a small horn and mount them on the rear, wired out of phase. If I used the 15CX38's, I only have a pair and no other CD's and horns to hand to do a rear wave.

How important to the experience will this be do you think? I'm sure either will have enough clean output capacity. How important will it be to have the rear wave at HF symmetrical with the front at lower frequencies? I haven't played with MF/HF xovers yet so I don't know what they can do, but I would guess 1k for the 15 and 2kish for the 8" at least to start.

Otherwise, whatever I choose, constructions will be fairly straightforward with a double thick ply baffle and a wood frame similar to the Vandersteen designs. That way I can simply paint it all black with a brush and have a stretch fabric sock made to cover them, a bit like the pic.

Any suggestions or advice welcome.
Without going into too much detail, the mains and rears are HE and have a lot of output capacity, as do the subs.

Cheers
