Phono Cable Suggestions?
« on: 13 Oct 2008, 06:20 pm »
Hello all:

My phono cable took a dump this last weekend so I am looking for a new one.

I am leaning toward Analysis Plus because I am familiar with their power, interconnect and speaker cables, but I thought I should poll the gurus first.

Hi there, please look at this thread: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=50447.0 that another member wrote about my cable for his VPI table.
Thanks

Hello Sonny:

Actually, I had read that thread but it does not seem to apply in my case.

I'm not looking for interconnects, I need a DIN connection upstream and RCA's downstream, with a ground cable, to connect my tone arm to my phono-pre.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I am using a Furutech Ag12 DIN to RCA on my Graham Phantom II.  No complaints.  :thumb:

I too, need a new phono cable for my old but rock solid Series 20 PLC 590 table and PA-1000 tonearm. I ordered that same Furutech AG12 DIN to RCA cable with the right angle connector. The Horseshoe pin orientation shown on the FURUTECH website was exactly what I needed. Unfortunately the horse shape was oriented in the opposite direction on the cable I recieved, which points the very stiff cabling on this cable towards the middle of the turntable instead of out the back. Thus, it won't fit in the cable pocket in the base of this turntable. The dealer was notified and apparently nothing can be done, so that cable is going back. I am now in the hunt for something else.

I ran across the Crimson Cable, but further research indicates that it is a rebranded JELCO cable.
I am looking at a Signal Cable, and one or two others.
I need a DIN right angle fitting with the open end of the horseshoe shape pin hole arrangement pointed away from the incoming cable or a straight DIN connector that is short, and with cabling that is flexible enought to make a sharp right angle bend at the DIN connector.

Further Suggestions Are Greatly Appreciated.

I used to use a Zu that had the DIN connection. A very nice cable and a steal for the price. Now I'm using a Vandenhul with my SME. For four times for what I paid for the ZU it's not even 25% better, but I needed a different connection. I've also used the OEM cable and the other is better. The Graham is pretty good as well. Always wanted to try a Cardas as it looks like it's the ticket.

Update to my previous post. The dealer for the FURUTECH Cable says they can reconfigure the orientation of the DIN fitting. They are doing so and will return the cable to me. I will try to remember to report  to this thread when I have it installed and the TT up and running.

That's great.  Let's hear it when you get a chance to listen to it for a while.  I believe Jeff at Tone has one under review.  It's better sounding (more treble extension and more robust midrange with possibly a tad bit less bass volume) to me than my Van den Hull silver cable that I use on my SME4 arm.  Both are DIN to RCA which allows direct comparison.  I am comfortable with my gear to cable ratio at about 10 or more and I am very comfortable with Ag12.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions.

Early this week I ordered the Furutech Ag12 DIN to RCA, and with luck it will be here tomorrow.

Maybe this weekend I'll be able to get the vinyl jones off of my back.

Gary,

My SME V came with Van den Hul cable, it's not too bad. But I ended swapping it out for a Cardas. The Cardas is nice, but a little too rich, and a hint of veil in my opinion. I had it for at least 5 years before I switched over to the Graham IC-70, which I like very much. Much more neutral and dynamic then the Cardas. One note regarding the Graham DIN connector. I purchased an used one with a 90 degreen DIN for the SME V, but had the same issue regarding the horseshoe shape opening that sanlanman mentioned. Bob Graham was really generous and asked me to send it back to get the head rotated so it would fit. Cartridge is Shelter 901 and table is Michell Orbe SE.
