Ultra Fet Valve 550 Bliss

While breaking in my new sub (ACI Titan XL) I played my system (sans mains) for a period of 36 hours, with a few rests in between though never powering off, to get the sub somewhat initially worked out. I then carefully reconnected the mains and ran the whole system quietly on white noise for an hour. By then it was 9:00pm and I was ready to plop down, suck down (an IPA), and throw down. Holy scammole! :o Did my system ever sound fab! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Best it's ever sounded! This is by far the longest I've ever kept my equipment on (previously probably just a few hours). By far it never sounded this amazingly smooth. My Ultra 550 IS smooooooth!!! I do not want to keep equipment on while I'm not at home, especially when tubes are involved, so it was scary for me, leaving the house while it thumped along. But damn!!! It sounded soooo smooooth that I am tempted to fire it up on Thursday mornings for weekend tunes.

Awesome work Frank! :D

We are glad the system is working so well for you sir.

However, I do cringe at the thought of leaving the equipment on for extended times when you are not using it.  The amp should be up and running, fully biased and ready to play in about one minute after turn-on.

If the equipment is left on while you are not around, small problems can turn into large problems as a minor fault pulls excess current and eventually cooks other stuff to death. In addition, every electronic part has a rated service life.  Although we select component parts for long, reliable, and troublefree service, the projected life is "used up" as the hours go by.  We suggest you use the amplifier for listening rather than heating the room and paying the Arabs more for energy.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

True dat Frank! I certainly would not want to buy a new amp sooner than necessary. But I swear it sounded like never before. (Maybe it was the IPA?)

Maybe give it a half hour to warm up if that tricks your trigger! In our UL approved testing lab, most components homogenize in 4 hours. That is better than 32 hours. Try that!
