Interview with Brian Cheney
« on: 16 Nov 2008, 06:52 pm »
In popular Croatian magazine Sat-Multimedia is  short interview with Brian Cheney. The magazine is for new television technologies, HD  and projectors equipment, movies and multichannel audio. I think that this is first european interview with Mr. Cheney. Before 3 days I sent the copy of last issue of this magazine to the Brian Cheney.
Down is the english version of interview:

7 Questions for designer and founder of VMPS  Mr.Brian Cheney

Whats your earliest memory of listening to music ?

1. When my parents bought a phonograph I was about three years old, but I quickly found the records I liked.   Since I could not yet read I marked the labels of my favorite music with a pen and played them over and over.  I remember being quite fond of Glenn Miller.

When did you first become interested in audio  ?

2. I built my first amplifier and speakers from a Heathkit and from Isophon driver parts I bought from Radio Rim in Munich, making my own cabinet.  This was 1962.

How do you describe a inspiration for design speaker ?

3. There are two main inspirations for a speaker design: something that will sell, and something that will provide better musical performance.  Both are equally important.

The good things come in small packages. Is QSO 626R small speaker ?

4. The 626Jr and 626R are our smaller speakers, just large enough to fit the ribbon mid panel and ribbon tweeter I use, plus a good woofer.  It's 24"H x 10.5"W x 13"D and weighs 46 lbs.  I'd make something smaller but  the speaker could not be a ribbon 3way.

The VLA is big subwoofer for audio system.  I know that im USA people  have big houses with big rooms, in european homes is thing different.
Whats your guide idea for  VLA ?

5. The idea behind the VLA tower is all out high level, low distortion, first-octave bass in a nice looking package that was affordable.  Not many people have room for it which is why we make smaller subwoofers.  However, the VLA will put out 100dB of 20Hz sound pressure at 1m with around 1% THD, which is remarkable.  At around $5000 USD it has no competition in the market.

What s yours opinion about new version  of audio called High Definiton Audio ?

6. I'm not familiar with the term High Definition Audio.  Perhaps you have a link?

You produce a variety of speakers.  What s your favorite ?

7. My favorite speaker is the one I'm currently working on.  In recent years I've patented a design for a Constant Directivity planar speaker, several versions of which are available.  Once you have constant directivity with frequency full-range you can apply digital correction to the speaker in the frequency and time domains, lower distortion, and basically, have an ideal transducer.  We are just about at that point now.

Whoops, my answers seem a little terse.  Should have put more "me me me!" into them.
