All:

Before I met one of the AC'ers (spudco), I only had one impression of Randy Newman, and that came from the "I Love LA" song.  So needless to say, I wasn't really wanting to hear anymore.  Ed put on this Randy Newman disc, and I was very impressed.  The guy is a great great songwriter!!!!!  I picked up his new Songbook Vol. 1 disc, and it's awesome.  Great piano, good, emotional vocals, and sweet lyrics. . .

I am a huge Randy Newman fan.  May I suggest Good Old Boys (recently nicely remastered by Rhino) as your next purchase?  I have been listening to it with great pleasure for 30 years.

Randy has produced a wide variety of music.  In addition to his piano based songs, he as composed several great movie scores and an opera.  I love his score to Pleasantville.  A true Americana trip.  His opera Faust has lots of great artists singing various parts including JT as God and Randy as the devil.  For a more "pop" recording, I would recomend "Land Of Dreams".  Of course, the classics "Good Old Boys" and "Sail Away" are timeless.  My current personal favorite however is "Bad Love".

randy newman is a great pianist & his songwriting is timeless.  "the sail" away album coulda been written after 9/11....  i distinctly remember not turning on my stereo for two weeks after 9/11 - yust no desire to hear music.  this is an extreme anomaly chez-sedon, where the rig is always on, if someone is home.  the 1st tune to be played after i finally turned the rig back on was "political science", & it was cranked...  i felt much better!   :D

Is "Songbook" just a greatest hits CD. or have the songs been redone by the mature Newman??

One thing that seems overlooked is that Newman is FUNNY (with a seriousness underlying the humor) in many of his best songs.

Songbook is both a greatest hits as well as a completely new recording.  Most of these cuts were recorded with other instrumentation on earlier records.  This record is just Randy at the piano.

Funny, when I think of Randy Newman, "Short People" song always comes to mind, as well as thoughts of Harry Nilsson("Everybody's Talkin"). Don't know why?  :? But I enjoy both songwriters. :)
