P.R.A.T. in D100/D200
« on: 30 Sep 2008, 01:41 am »
Hello all,

I've read basically each thread in the CI circle, but I still have a question about the PRAT factor (pace rhythm and timing) of the D100/D200.

So how does the D100/D200 fare in that respect? I have a McCormack (DNA 0.5 rev. B) which is very good in PRAT. May I expect the C.I. amps to be equal/better/worst?

thanks!
Luigi

Prat is all about bass. CIA has extremely low output impedance for accurate full fast punchy bass, and smooth midrange to not distract from the tempo.

Thanks for your answer. However, I think that's only part of PRAT, at least the way I intend it. Two examples: the timing with which a violin or a voice is reproduced makes all the difference in the listener emotion. Horns must be reproduced with huge dynamics (and many amplifiers simply cannot do that..).

I have owned the McCormack DNA-0.5 Rev A and when I briefly owned the D*200 Monos, the latter was a REVELATION and provided me with a brief insight of how good class D amplifiers can perform and sound. Pair the D*200 with an excellent preamplifier (McCormack ALD-1 Rev A Gold was great synergy) and you will hear the realism of a trumpet's blare and a violin's bow! The DNA-0.5 was a musical amplifier but just did not have the power of the diminutive D*200 which I found more dynamic. In my view, the D*200 in my system was much better than the 0.5 in the areas you mention and more ... If not for reliability issues (I seem to be unlucky  :(), the D*200 would still be in my system!

I have a friend (Ohlins on AudioCircle) who replaced his McCormack DNA-1 (not sure if it was modded) with the D*100 and as far as I know, he is still enjoying his D*100s when we last communicated. Drop him a pm and elicit his views!

Best Regards
Dennis

IMHO, the D200s were very smooth and mellow in my system for a year+. Good bass, but the highs were too laid back. I did not feel that this was a good recipie for PRAT, which to me would require lively, spunky mids and highs. Despite the smoothness, I was never able to fully relax into the sound - There was something else going on - some discontinuity or something that made my jaw clench.

When I got my tube amp, I felt that the overall sound improved drastically, esp. in the highs where there was sooo much more information.  (Cymbal hit now = Sound of stick on cymbal, then initial cymbal attack, then transition to gradual change in tone, then fade into background; W/ the D200s the cymbals were more like modulated white noise, which I guess is what ClassD is).

My $0.01

YEP,but you wont find a reviewer that has the balls to talk about it,or mention it in reviews.

the timing and prat are highly infectious...
