Changing The Voice of a Tube Amplifier

OK- You have a new tube amplifier and there are things you like and dislike about it. The least expensive way to re-voice your amplifier is to change the negative feedback circuit. Too much feedback tends to roll off highs. Zero feedback (in some designs) and speaker combinations can sound strident. The thing to do is to make the feedback tunable to your system. A three position switch (-3, -8, 0) for example works nicely as does completely variable feedback. Fender calls their variable feedback control the 'Presence' control. I like that term because it does indeed change the sound staging as well as the tonal balance.

Changing the feedback options will not help with all problems- but it does the best with basic tonality issues.

There are many people well versed in tube circuits on here. I'm writing for those who would like some basic information and to stop them from spending thousands on finding the perfect amp. Saving money ALWAYS sounds good!

Send along any questions you have. Chances are others will have the same ones.
