Response on using iTouch remote is very slow
« on: 27 Sep 2008, 07:50 pm »
I just got a 1st generation iPod Touch (it was a freebie), and I've upgraded to 2.1 and installed Remote on it.  I have it working but iTunes is very slow to react to commands, to the point I don't think that it's working until suddenly the song comes on.  I'm using an older 802.11b router, so maybe that's it, but nothing else is that slow.  I was expecting instantaneous response when I used this.  The computer is an 2ghz Intel iMac running 10.4.11.  iTunes is up to date as well, it doesn't work at all with old versions.  This would be pretty cool if it weren't so slow.

Any ideas?

sorry to hear you your set up is not working well.

11b is sort of slow relatively:

802.11b up to 11 Mbps (actual is around 6 Mbps)
802.11g up to 54 Mbps  (actual is around 25-30)
802.11n at 100 Mbps

I wonder do you have any microwave or any 2.4 Ghz cordless landlines nearby? you or your neighbors? That could cause some interference with your wireless network.

I use a 1st gen iTouch with an old G5 (which is only .11g) and the response is instantaneous when using Remote. This is through an airport extreme (.11n) router.

I considered that maybe my network was slow, but we have 4 computers on it wireless and we only have an issue when video is being uploaded to youtube, but that's going over the DSL.  This shouldn't go over the DSL.  I could check all the settings on the router, if I understand them.  The router itself is a common Linksys.  We've never had a problem with interference.

I'm going to check out the wireless setup on the iPod itself.  I've had some spottiness with surfing on it.  While it is a cool surfing device I already see the limitation in the screen size.  I can't see the tiny font of a forum such as this unless I stretch it, but then I have to scroll around, also a PITA.  My wife suggested a bigger version, too big for a pocket, but not as big as a small laptop, would be ideal.  Kind of like the Kindle.
