Cornet2 Blowing fuses
« on: 17 Aug 2008, 10:23 pm »
Have Cornet2 that's been running fine for the past 6 months and yesterday when I went to turn it on the fuse was blown.

Checked for any obvious burned components (nothing), removed tubes and replaced fuse.  With no rectifier,  I get about 650vac and 6vac on transformer output.

I added the rectifier tube and after about 20 secs I heard a buzzing and the grid stopper resistor (R101) started to heat up and blister...upon which I shut it down.

Rectifier is a new Sovtek 5y3gt from antique sound.  I have no way of testing the tube, but my guess it's gone bad.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Steve

I'd say the rectifier tube is bad.

OK...thanks for the quick response.  I think I'm going to go for a NOS from the good ole' USA for next rectifier.

Cheers, Steve

Replaced the tube with NOS GE and replaced the grid stopper resistors to be sure.  The one that started to blister value had dropped to 200 ohms.

Everything is back up and working fine.  Only thing I notice is that I get the green light within about 2 secs vice the 10 secs or so with the Sovtek.  Suppose the GE tube ramps up much faster.
