In Car Use

Danny how would the M130X or the M165X fare in the automotive environment? I have a friend that is wanting to do something in a show car and he really likes the sound of the A/V3 Neos I have. Would either of these do ok in the quasi free air use in a car door?

Neos have been used in car audio to very good effect in the past. Most were pretty decent custom jobs fiberglassed in the a pillars and I even saw one in a quasi asymetric waveguide (ala image dynamics) that was mounted at the base of the front windshield and aimed toward the center. Didnt get to hear that one. The GR woofs would likely work wel if the TS parameters are accounted for properly- Throwing anything in a door rarely works

I am no car audio expert but I do sell a pretty good handful of drivers to the high end car audio crowd.

I have a customer that recently put four M-130/16 woofers in the dash in an MTM arrangement with a Neo3pdr and then six M-165X woofers in each door for lower bass.

Now he is debating whether he really needs the subs.

I have sold several SW-12B's for car audio as well.

Thanks for the reply. I will pass the news along to him and see what direction he wants to go. I dont think we will be doing any dash modifications but he is wanting a 3-wat set up in the front. The extended top end of the M130 should make it very easy to match up to one of the smaller domes like the Seas 27TAFNCG. I am thinking something along the lines of a pair of M165X's with a M130 and tweeter in each door but it isnt my money so I will have to see what he wants to do. I am fixing to place an order for some M130x's to augment the lower end on my A/V-3 Neos so maybe I can get him to make a decision before then. Thanks again for the help.

The whole point is the controlled directivity and low verical dispersion of the neo 3. Domes are very hard to tame in car audio= been there.

Trust me I understand the point. I have been doing this since the mid 80's. If it were my vehicle it would have compression drivers and horns under the dash (being that I am friends with the head of R&D at Image Dynamics and know the owner), but it isnt mine. I spent several years doing car audio professionally, it is actually what led me to home audio. I have worked on several national champions, published vehicles, and also had my personal vehicle published. Custom work isnt an issue. I have just about done it all in a car.
The car is not going to be for competition just for show. The primary showcase is the 850 horses under the hood. The stereo system just needs to be enough so that he can hear it and will sound good when it is on display. We have weekly car shows down here that are usually just outside in parking lots and other than playing around on the strip or a weekend cruise that is what this car is intended for. It will still be a custom build with lots of fiberglass work but just no intentions of any sound competions. In other words tonality is more important that staging on this one.
